#Microblog Mondays 178: Attention Management

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

It is very hard to manage your attention.  It’s different from time management, which I think of as allocating time well or spending time on the right tasks.  This article says it best:

Attention management is more than not looking at social media every five minutes—though it’s also that, too. It’s also about setting priorities and focusing your attention where it matters.

It is riffing off of this article on attention management and knowing your essential priorities.

People often ask me how I get stuff done, working from home.  While I don’t agree with everything Rao says, it’s a great starting point.  Turn off the distractions.  Tell yourself your intention.  Get tasks accomplished in the best order.  One at a time.

Easier said than done, and some days I do it better than others.

What tricks do you use to manage your attention?

#Microblog Mondays 177: Delurk

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I’ve been celebrating International Blog Delurking Week (the first week in January) for 11 years.  11 times I’ve asked the people who silently read to raise their hand for one comment and then go back to silently reading.

And then this year I forgot.  We were all the way through the week when Parul wrote and said, “Uh, aren’t you doing International Blog Delurking Week?”  Thank you, Parul, for reminding me AND for making the badge this year.

So if you are reading, let me know you are reading by simply saying, “here!” or anything else you want to say.

#Microblog Mondays 176: Letterboxing

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

Before we got into geocaching, we tried letterboxing.  It’s the same concept, except you follow clues instead of coordinates.  We kept our notebook in my purse so we could mark it if we found a letterbox while we were out.

I just read about the origin of letterboxing, and it made me want to drop our notebook back in my purse:

Letterboxing began in the mid-19th century, when a man knelt in the peat bogs of Dartmoor, England, constructed a small cairn, and placed a glass jar inside. He told other hikers to leave something in the jar if they came across it, and people began to leave messages for future visitors.

With that act, James Perrott unwittingly laid the foundation for a hobby that continues more than 150 years later.

Don’t you love that?  To be a hiker and know that there is this jar out there filled with messages for you if you can find it?

Have you ever been letterboxing?  Want to start?

#MicroblogMondays 175: Celebrating the Year

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

On the last day of the year, I cleaned up my to do list and got ready for the work week.  I played a lot of Shuffle Cats, crossword puzzles, solitaire, and Sudoku.  We watched the first Lord of the Rings movie because we missed our yearly tradition of watching all three films between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.  We ate appetizers for dinner.

I never got out of my pyjamas.

It doesn’t look very exciting when you write it out like that, but it was the perfect way (for me) to spend the last day of the year.  Nothing big.  Nothing grand.  No champagne or fancy party.  Just everyone piled into a bed, eating chocolate, fighting orcs, and waiting for the ball to drop.

How did you mark the last day of 2017?

#MicroblogMondays 174: Merry Christmas

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

We don’t celebrate Christmas, so I live vicariously through all of your Internet postings.  I love hearing about Christmas traditions.

Like do you go away or host it?  Hang stockings for decoration or fill them?  Church or no church?  What are you eating today?

Do you open gifts on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?  And during gift opening, do you go one person at a time so everyone can watch other people open presents or do you open gifts at the same time?  Are you ever surprised or do you pretty much know what’s under the tree?

So tell me about your Christmas (or grab a good idea for next year if one pops up in the comment section).
