#Microblog Mondays 183: Queue Up
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
I just read about the “sociocultural history of the line,” a topic that doesn’t sound very interesting but turns out to be fascinating.
Did you know that the first historical recording of people using a line was in 1837? Before that you just gathered around the counter and joined the push to be served. I would have never gotten bread. First of all, I’m usually too short to be seen over a counter. Beyond that, I would have given up in about three seconds. I have a weak will to push into crowds.
The rest of the article is about how we behave in line and our willingness to participate in the construction. Read it — I promise you will think about it the next time you’re in a long line at the grocery store.
Which would you rather do — queue up or join a free-for-all at the counter?

#Microblog Mondays 182: Meditation
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
I’ve been thinking a lot about meditation lately. I downloaded 10% Happier while it was on sale, though I haven’t started reading it. I downloaded two apps: Calm and Breathe. And then I just… stopped.
I mean, I think about meditation all the time. But I haven’t started it yet.
My interest in meditation was piqued by a review of another book, especially this description of meditation: “[it] is not like other goal-oriented tasks. Rather, it is about getting away from the self.” Who wouldn’t like to take a small break from themselves every once in a while? But then I continued reading the article and it all got very muddy inside my mind. I don’t want that kind of break from myself.
Do you meditate regularly?

#Microblog Mondays 181: Be My Valentine
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
We don’t do anything for Valentine’s Day anymore. Josh and I have never celebrated it. (We also don’t celebrate Tu B’Av, which is sort of the Jewish version of Valentine’s Day.)
When the kids were little, I was the class mum, so I threw the school party. They filled out Valentine’s cards for all of their classmates, ate candy, and played games. But now that they’re in middle school, we don’t have that ritual.
I don’t feel sad about it, and I certainly don’t want to go out Wednesday night. But I do feel like I need to make heart-shaped pancakes or something of that ilk.
What is the most low-key way to mark Valentine’s Day without really doing anything for Valentine’s Day?

#Microblog Mondays 180: Impatient
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
I would describe myself as impatient. I excel at delayed gratification when I already know that I have X (like saving a piece of chocolate to eat for an indefinitely amount of time), but… well… here’s an example of my impatience: When I begin writing a new book, I feel anxious by the end of the first day that it’s not already complete.
Like I said: impatient.
Which, you know, can be a good thing because I am always motivated to move forward. But I know I also waste a lot of time wishing things forward when they’re going to unfold in their own, sweet time. I liked this post by Darius Foroux:
The book you’re writing, the presentation you’re making, the business you’re building, things can’t happen fast enough. There’s nothing wrong with wanting things to happen fast. In fact, that’s one of the main reasons people and companies innovate.
But we have to realize there’s a difference between a desire to achieve things and impatience. The former helps you, the latter harms you, especially your creativity.
Do you consider yourself a patient or impatient person?

#Microblog Mondays 179: The Traveling Picture
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
ChickieNob was telling Josh about WellieWishers, and he said they sounded horrifying. So she drew him his very own WellieWisher and slipped it under his blankets so he saw it when he got into bed that night.
Well played, little girl.

He transferred the picture to her room, and the creepy doll picture traveled back and forth between them until I somehow got roped into this when I found it in my underwear drawer. The only person who refuses to play is the Wolvog, who respectfully removed the WellieWisher from the bathroom so he could brush his teeth in peace.
A simple prank. Not as good as the ultimate prank. That was a long joke, considering the set up was in 2013.
Tell me another good prank.
