Team Bowl
The writer Amy Tector asked if people choose a fork or a spoon when it is a meal that could go either way, and while I don’t have strong feelings about utensils, I do always reach for a bowl when a plate could technically do.
We run out of bowls — and we have an extraordinary number of bowls — long before we run out of plates. We run out of bowls before the dishwasher is full, so then I am forced to balance it out with a plate. I will put anything and everything in a bowl. All pasta. All salads. All rice dishes. All usual things that go in bowls, such as soup, cereal, or yogurt. I live a heavily bowl-centered life.
Are you team bowl or plate?

I like a bowl too! Food fits better in a bowl and it’s easier to carry and balance on my lap
Hmmm. I had to think about this. I wrote a long response and then went back to your first line with the qualifier “it could go either way!” Ha. Delete delete delete! I still think it very much depends what I’m eating. Pasta, noodles, etc all go in wide bowls. Japanese or Korean rice dishes go in taller bowls. Thai curries etc on a plate though it could theoretically go in a bowl. There is something comforting about a bowl, though.
As to spoon or fork, it also depends on what I’m eating. Thai food – which is a common meal in our house – is definitely eaten with a spoon and fork rather than a knife and fork. In fact, unless it is noodles (and even Thai noodles are eaten in Thailand with fork and spoon) which require chopsticks, I’ll use spoon and fork for many Asian meals. Small pasta (eg orecchiette) a spoon, larger pasta with forks, etc. After this, next time I reach for either I will be thinking about why!
Team use-the-least-number of dishes or utensils here.
🙂
We use mugs for a lot of things that could go in bowls (cereal, yogurt, ice cream, some soups)…
3/4 of my family tends to use forks when it could go either way, but my daughter is very spoon-centric. I’m half European so I’ll even go for a stew with a fork so long as I have a crusty bread to sop up the liquid. (All-American DH will use a spoon in that situation.)
I am team plate and fork. I can fit more plates in our dishwasher than bowls. Unless it is soup, applesauce or something runny, I always eat with a fork.
Why bother with either the plate or the bowl? Just eat directly from the pot or pan and think of the dishwasher pellets you’ll save. For extra savings, forget the utensils. You have ten fingers for a reason.
Ha, Anne B! I eat applesauce with a fork sometimes!
I am team plate. I have lots of both, and it varies depending on what we’re eating whether I run out of bowls or plates first. But I usually grab a plate before a bowl.
