Ice Cream Deep Freeze
So we do this thing maybe one or two times per year — usually the last beach trip of summer and again in the fall. We ask the people at an ice cream store we like to deep freeze ice cream to take home. You have to put in the order at least 48 hours ahead of time, and I leave reminders for myself to do it two days before we leave for the trip.
We’ve been doing it for so long that I don’t remember how we even knew to ask. We must have been in conversation with the owner and mentioned how much the ice cream encapsulates our time at the beach, and they suggested that we bring some back with us. I’m certain the owner is the person who gave us the cooler we use to bring it home.
It’s still rock solid when we get it in the house, but a day or two in our freezer brings it back to normal freezer temperatures. And then we can eat ice cream for several more weeks while we’re home.
I was thinking about this because we’re at the end of our fall ice cream stash. It’s something nice I do for future Melissa. And she’s really grateful to past Melissa for thinking of doing this.

Our favourite local gelato store will sell it in packs, although I’ve never taken any home. 🙂
Re: eating ice cream in winter: there used to be an American ice cream shop chain called Swensens. (I just Googled, and it still exists! — it started in San Francisco, but it’s now actually Canadian-owned and headquartered in Markham, Ontario, just north of Toronto!) Anyway, there was a shop in the funky Osborne Village area of Winnipeg — long gone now, but I loved their Hot Fudge Bonanza Split. On my 21st birthday — January 1982, 40 (gulp) years ago — I had a birthday dinner with a friend, and then we went to Swensens and had Hot Fudge Bonanza Splits for dessert. We were the only two people in the place. 😉 It was snowing, but not too cold, and we walked over the bridge to the Metropolitan, a gorgeous old theatre that has since been renovated into an “event” centre, and saw “Reds” with Warren Beatty & Diane Keaton. When I got back to my dorm room at university, my sister was there with a cake that my mother had sent her money to buy for me, and I shared it with all of my floormates and they sang “Happy Birthday” to me and gave me “the royal bumps.” A few days later, I went to a party where I got together with the guy I am now married to. 🙂 It was one of the best birthdays ever. 🙂
I love this! We were gifted fresh bagels from a NY bagel place and they’re currently in my freezer. Future Beth will be excited to eat those fresh out of the air fryer.
