More Than One Path to Happiness

Carolyn Hax does it again. Well, actually, one of her commenters does it again. Carolyn gave great advice, but then one of her commenters followed up with an even better point.

The question asker is struggling with the idea that forming a new plan (buying a home) means giving up her earlier thoughts for how she wanted her life to turn out (travel). Carolyn gives her a few ways to be okay with a change in plans.

And then, at the end of the column, another person pipes in:

“If there’s anything that wasn’t in your plan that you’re happy about, then you know the ‘plan’ isn’t the only path to satisfaction.”

Yessssssss.

Here is to Plan Bs and the fact that life probably contains more plans off the assumed path than on.

I love this, of course. Life definitely contains more plans off the assumed path than on! (Childless-not-by-choice bloggers can definitely attest to that.) I’m a little surprised she doesn’t really know this by 35. I do hope she manages to live overseas at some stage – but she can do it with her career, or even young kids (as I know people who have), rather than instead of a career/house/children. I always hoped to live overseas again – and still do. But I know if I don’t, I can still have satisfaction doing shorter trips, or other things that I don’t know are still in my future. My MIL was riding a camel in her 80s, after all.
