Find 10 Things
Cup of Jo asked back in January, “What is your pro tip?” and people dropped over a thousand comments of life hacks.
Like this one:”I have a whiteboard on my fridge, but instead of writing what the meal plan for the week is (which I have written elsewhere), I write what I actually cooked for dinner each night as I’m putting leftovers in the fridge. Then I know what leftovers are no longer good.”
So smart. And this one we already do and have for years: “Travel with a plastic doorstop in your suitcase. Once in the room, wedge it under the door, making it impossible to open.”
And a perfect one: “Make a decision and then make it work.”
I am pulling out my top 10 from this list because there are too many good ideas to let float by. I’m capturing them in my bullet journal. What are your favourites?

Writing what you actually cooked is a good idea! When I open something like cream cheese or orange juice I try to write the date on it or I always forget how long it’s been open in the fridge. My tip is to always pack valuables plus overnight things in your carry on luggage (toothbrush, underwear etc). Just in case your luggage gets delayed!
I just learned this one myself – always cut brownies with a plastic knife. The cuts are perfect and the brownies don’t stick to the plastic.
I haven’t read all of the 1433 comments, but my pro tip is to do a load of laundry every day. I put two small baskets in each of the kids bedrooms. They are expected to take off their clothes and sort them into lights and darks. We have four baskets in our master closet for lights, darks, no-dry darks and jeans. When a basket is full, I put it in the wash. Before I would just put everything in one basket. Then I would sort it into multiple piles and then they would sit around for days until I got time to do it all. Now I’m not a slave to a weekend afternoon of laundry. 30 minutes each day is much more manageable to me! The kids also help and fold and put away their baskets.
Well, thanks, Mel. I read this post last night, and so spent a couple of hours gong through all the comments, and saving the ones I liked to me Notepad. Then I spent another hour or so doing the same this morning, and I still haven’t finished!
I really liked the idea of the Bogus Grilled Cheese (toast the bread, as the cheese, melt it in the microwave) and might try that, and the suggestion to freeze leftover wine in ice cubed trays for use in recipes. Measure the length of your hand was good too (then you always have a ruler). And I thoroughly agree with this one – “Wear sunscreen on your face. Every. Single. Day.”
My tips would be:
Always rent a car from and return it to the airport, before or after spending time in a city. That way you don’t have to drive out of a big city like Rome or Paris.
Roast or grill asparagus – it keeps the flavour better.
