#Microblog Monday 420: What Did You Learn?

This was going around the internet a few weeks ago, but I’m still learning from it. (For one, I am guilty of perpetuating the Phil Collins “In the Air Tonight” falsehood, most recently to the twins.)
I learned that mapmakers used to write “here are lions” on unknown places on maps. “The classical phrase used by medieval cartographers was HIC SVNT LEONES (literally, “here are lions”) when denoting unknown territories on maps.”
What did you learn?

#Microblog Monday 419: Quiet Thanksgiving

Poor Beorn is not a fan of Thanksgiving. The cooking sounds like many other holidays, but there are fewer bits and pieces he’s given while I’m prepping things because potatoes are not a guinea pig’s friend. And we had potatoes three ways (mashed potatoes, cottage fries, and balsamic sweet potatoes). Still, he enjoyed the parsley leftovers and the ends of celery. But it was a little heartbreaking to watch him stand on his hind legs, his face hopeful, as he wheeked at me in the kitchen to give him a bite of whatever I was chopping.
How was your Thanksgiving?

#Microblog Monday 418: Childhood in a Nutshell

I’ll admit that when I first saw the title “Why Did We All Have the Same Childhood,” I immediately rejected the idea. We didn’t all have the same childhood. Except, it turns out, we did.
BOOBS on a calculator, cootie catchers, and peeling off dried Elmer’s glue are all part of my childhood. And if you’re a certain age, they are probably part of yours.
I love this article (and that play still happens!). Do the moments they mention transcend North America and the UK?

#Microblog Monday 417: Ole Parsley

I got Ole Parsley near the pandemic’s beginning: June 7, 2020. It wasn’t my first pandemic plant — the first… several… died from overwatering. But Allison taught me how to keep plants alive (and to stop naming plants I intended to eat), and Ole Parsley was a constant companion for the last 2.5 years.
I knew he was dying, but I couldn’t face it until this weekend when I said goodbye in the backyard. Maybe it is silly loving a plant this much, but I spent a lot of time with Ole Parsley.
Yesterday, we bought three new parsley plants and two new basil plants for good measure. There’s a lot of lush green that will slowly die over the next few months as I snip off leaves while cooking. I’ll love those plants, but none will ever take the place in my heart held by Ole Parsley.

#Microblog Monday 416: Becoming Ambidextrous
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
I was reading a blog post, and the person mentioned that they were working to become ambidextrous. Just because.
It never occurred to me that this was something to attempt, at least not without clear reason, such as not being able to use your dominant hand or because it naturally occurred. But 1% of the world is ambidextrous. That number seems a little high. That would be 78 million people. More than the entire population of the United Kingdom. Without a dominant hand.
I’m not sure why I’m still thinking about this person’s comment this far after the fact, except to wonder if we should all be attempting to write neatly with our non-dominant hand.
