#Microblog Monday 416: Becoming Ambidextrous

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I was reading a blog post, and the person mentioned that they were working to become ambidextrous. Just because.

It never occurred to me that this was something to attempt, at least not without clear reason, such as not being able to use your dominant hand or because it naturally occurred. But 1% of the world is ambidextrous. That number seems a little high. That would be 78 million people. More than the entire population of the United Kingdom. Without a dominant hand.

I’m not sure why I’m still thinking about this person’s comment this far after the fact, except to wonder if we should all be attempting to write neatly with our non-dominant hand.

#Microblog Monday 415: Halloween Candy

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

Josh picked up excellent Halloween candy to pass out tonight, and we managed not to eat all of it before today. (I cannot say the same about other years.) It has chocolate (Kit Kat and Hershey), peanut butter (Reese’s options), AND non-chocolate candy (Twizzlers). It also has Almond Joy, which no one in the world likes except me, so all the kids leave it behind, and I get them for myself.

What are you passing out?

#Microblog Monday 414: Judging the Book (Not by the Cover)

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

As someone who absolutely judges a book by its cover — I’m more likely not to read something I want to read if it has a bad cover than to read a book because it has a good cover — I thought this website is brilliant.

It gives you the first page or so of a book to read. If you like it, you can reveal the title and author so you can read it for real. If you don’t, you click “next book.”

Playing “guess the book” from the first page is also fun. It’s obvious when I’ve read the book or am familiar with the characters. (I see you, Mr. Phileas Fogg.) But I’ve been surprised sometimes to discover that a book I never thought about reading is actually quite engaging.

#Microblog Monday 413: Summary

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

This is the coolest tool. (I know I say that a lot but technology is amazing.) Let’s say there is a long video, and you’re not sure you want to watch it because you don’t know what it’s about. You could scroll around and see what you can glean, or you can put the video through this tool and it will pop out a summary.

So, for instance, I found this video of someone driving around Chincoteague.

It returned: “The Chincoteague Island Scenic Drive is a beautiful drive that takes you along the island’s coastline. You’ll see beautiful views of the water, the island’s wildlife, and the Historic District. The drive is perfect for those who want to experience the beauty of the island. The video is a 4K travelogue of the scenic drive on Chincoteague Island, Virginia, narrated by a foreign tourist. The tourist enjoys the scenery and sounds of the island, including the wild horses.”

Isn’t that brilliant?

#Microblog Monday 412: A Fun Way To Search

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

What if you could talk to the books in the bookstore and have them spill their wisdom? Wouldn’t that make a great basis for a story? Google (I think it’s Google) set up a way to search books just like that. You ask the books a question in the search bar, and it returns quotes from books that are part of Google Books. Isn’t that brilliant?

I asked it: “What should I do with my empty nest?”

And it returned this nugget: “You know how to create. Build a new nest. In the south.” Zero chance of that, but see what answers the books give your questions.
