#Microblog Monday 455: Registration Failure

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

Yesterday, I went to register for an event. The event page informed me I was entitled to 11 tickets due to our membership level. I filled out the form and requested two.

A pop-up appeared with, “Are you bringing any children?” even though I skipped entering anything in the box that specifically asked about children. You would think that leaving it empty would indicate that I was bringing zero children.

I almost closed the box without registering but finished the form without another automatic reference to our smaller household. What someone thought was a thoughtful touch, reminding people to count everyone in their party so they had an accurate head count, was another paper cut.

#Microblog Monday 454: Short Term Reality With Long Term Optimism

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

Not a secret that I have been struggling with the twins leaving. I write about it several times each week. This mental model gave me food for thought because I reject any messaging about how I should also focus on the good parts of an empty nest. That’s not where I am. And with this, I don’t have to feel optimistic in the short term. I can feel whatever I’m feeling in the short term with the idea that a future point will be different.

Dropping it here in case it is helpful for anyone else.

#Microblog Monday 453: The Best of Technology

I saw this on Facebook, and it was such a good idea — like the fish doorbell — that I had to put it here, too. I took a screenshot in case you don’t have a Facebook account and can’t see the post.

Isn’t that such an intelligent use of technology? It collects data by encouraging what people are already doing (taking a picture) but making it do double-duty as both capturing the scenery and charting change.

So smart.

#Microblog Monday 452: Terrible Travel Agents

I found a tool that looked super promising. You plug in what you’re looking for in a trip, and it spits back out an itinerary. How brilliant is that?

But I didn’t know if it would plan a good trip, so I decided to begin with a place I knew very well. It sent me first to a restaurant that closed at least one year ago. Not a great start. But it redeemed itself with a fun free morning activity. Then it sent me on an expensive activity that was a repeat of the free activity, but it broke it up by sending me to cooking school in the UK for lunch, giving me a half-hour window to get from Virginia to the UK and back. The next day, they finished the itinerary with another closed restaurant. In the meantime, it missed the island’s two vegetarian options.

Maybe not.

#Microblog Monday 451: Two Games

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

I’ve been playing two new games: one from the Washington Post and one from the New York Times.

Keyword gives you words missing a letter, and filling in the missing letter gives you the center word. It’s not difficult, but it’s on a timer. So you’re trying to work quickly with the smallest amount of guesses.

Connections gives you sixteen words. You need to group each set of four that go together. So a perfect score is that you group the correct four together four times. You also get four chances to mess up.
