Sort of an odd choice, and I don’t really know what I meant by that. Was I trying to remember to watch Grey’s Anatomy the next night?
Anyway, what was your first Tweet?

#MicroblogMondays 81: The Ides of March
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
Tomorrow is the Ides of March. We’re supposed to beware of it. It was actually the Roman new year, which means that today would be the Feast of Anna Perenna. It was a big celebration to mark the end of the year.
In addition to the usual festive food and alcohol, the day was marked by Mamuralia, a ritual that involved dressing up an elderly man in animal skins and then beating him while he ran out of town (provided that he was able to make it out of town while people beat him senselessly and that he didn’t die from the stench of wearing the skin of an animal over his body). He was to represent the old year, driving it away to make room for the new one.
Are accounts of this ritual accurate? I’m not sure I want to know. I just love the fact that it could possibly be true.
So, in honour of the Roman new year, what would you figuratively get rid of today to leave in the old year, and what do you want to do differently in the new?

#MicroblogMondays 80: Open Webpages
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
I have an article on L’Inconnue de la Seine open in the Internet browser on my phone. It has been there for days. The article itself made me so sad, and then it felt wrong to close the page, as if doing so somehow diminished this nameless woman’s life as much as turning her into death mask. Or Rescue Annie.
There are dozens of other open searches, from a pinball machine to a video on how to find all the minikits in one of the LEGO Dimension levels to the lyrics of a song I was trying to remember a few weeks ago. And those are just the open pages on my phone. Please, let’s not even go into all the tabs I have open on the computer full of random things I’ve looked up this week and never closed.
Do you leave web pages open for days? Which ones are currently open on your phone or computer browser because you looked up something and never closed the tab?

#MicroblogMondays 79: Habits
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
The twins and I have settled into a thoroughly enjoyable and very bad habit. Every week before their art class, we go out for water ice and custard. It started because I was having a bad day. “I need something nice. Let’s go out for gelati.”
Every week since, we’ve found some reason to need gelatis. By last week, we were no longer pretending. The kids got in the car after school and said, “Are we going out for gelati?” As if it were a question. As if I hadn’t flipped my turn signal to take us in the direction of the store. “Oh? Do you want to?”
I told them that we had to break this habit because it’s so bad for our bodies. The ChickieNob added, “It’s so bad for our bodies, but it’s so good for our souls.” How can I argue with that?
Do you have any bad habits that bring you so much pleasure?

#MicroblogMondays 78: Yes, Those Are My #ObamaAndKids
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
Thank you to everyone who sent along the Time magazine or the Jezebel article about that hashtag #ObamaAndKids. We were out all day, so I didn’t know that was happening on Twitter.
That photo of the twins that they included actually marks an interesting moment. It was the first time I let the kids go off with a stranger.
The ChickieNob had questions for the President, so one of the staffers arranged for the kids to go over to the other side of the room to meet him. I wouldn’t be able to see them during that time because there was a crowd around the President. I must have had a look on my face when they told me what was going to happen because the woman touched my arm and said, “I will not let anything happen to them. They are in the safest place in the US, and I will stay with them the whole time.”
(In my defense, it was a really big room. And they were really small kids. And I couldn’t see them. And I’m a really nervous person, in general.)
She clearly returned them to me, unscathed. And while they were over there, this super-nice photographer we met earlier in the day photographed them for me at the same time as Pete Souza so I could see what was happening while they were out of my sight line. The whole experience made me chill out (a bit) but was moreover a really good reminder that there are a lot of kind adults out there who are going to watch out for your kids when you’re not around. And those adults that day — none of whom had kids and therefore weren’t doing it from experience because they knew how nerve wracking it can be to be separated from your children in a crowd — were good people who set my heart at ease that day.
And to keep me from sounding like the only anxiety-prone woman on the Internet, tell me what makes you nervous. And has anyone ever helped you quell your fears?
