#MicroblogMondays 87: Give Up or Take On

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

We are in the middle of Pesach.  This is my hardest holiday.  I am really bad at giving things up.  I can’t stop thinking about the bread and pasta that I’m not allowed to eat for 8 days.

It’s just 8 days.  There are plenty of things that I don’t eat 8 days in a row, and it never feels like a hardship.  An artichoke, for instance.  I haven’t had an artichoke in the last 8 days, and you don’t see me wringing my hands over it.  But tell me that I’m not allowed to have an artichoke for 8 days and all I will think about are artichokes 24/7.

Would you rather give up a food item for 8 days or have to eat an undesirable food item 8 days in a row?

#MicroblogMondays 86: Whine

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

It feels like there has been an awful lot of articles about complaining lately, both for and against the act.  It feels like complaining is 2016’s tidying up.  You know how 2015 was all about tidying up and 2014 was all about happiness?  2016 is flooded with articles about complaining or sleep.

For it: It’s healthy to vent!  It’s productive to complain!  Whining helps you define what is important to you!  Complaining can bond two people together.

Against it: It’s unhealthy to vent!  It ruins your relationships to complain!  Whining annoys everyone around you and stresses them out.  Complaining makes you see the world through a negative lens.

I am pro-complaining, though it can be tiring to say or hear the same complaint over and over again.  The best sort of complaining session is the one where you sit down with the other person having no clue that they are annoyed by the exact same thing that is annoying you, and you complain viciously together.

Complaining — for or against?

#MicroblogMondays 85: Literary Geocaching

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I’ve been debating whether or not to start The Silent History.  Is anyone else reading it?

It’s a novel that is written for the iPhone, and as you travel around, you unlock parts of the story based on your GPS coordinates.  Actually, I think you can read the main chunk of the story from any space, but then there are hundreds of side stories that can only be unlocked from certain locations.  It has been around for a while, and I’ve looked at it a dozen times without downloading it.

I sort of like this idea of needing to travel somewhere to read part of the story, with the location affecting how you read the words on the screen.  And I sort of don’t like this idea of getting off my bum and traveling somewhere for the sake of reading.

What do you think?  Yay or nay on this idea of literary geocaching and only getting to read a story from a certain location?

#MicroblogMondays 84: Serial

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I am currently working my way through Ben Aaronovitch’s books based on a friend’s recommendation.  They’re fantastic — Harry Potter for grownups.  It’s a series, which is nice because if you like the characters in the first one, you know what you’ll be reading next.

Though I know that — like the True Blood books — I’ll probably take a break after three books to read something else, and then dip in and out of the series the rest of the way, even though I always start out with the intention to read a whole series back-to-back.  I didn’t think about how I read series until The Paperback Princess asked whether you read your series back-to-back or dip-in-and-out.

I’m a dipper, but I’m the worst sort of dipper because I pretend to be a back-to-backer so I can purchase the whole series.

How do you approach series: back-to-back books or dip-in-and-out?  Or does it depend on the series itself or the number of books in it?

#MicroblogMondays 83: Injuries

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I gracefully stumbled into a low-lying planter at the mall.  I was twisting backwards to try to figure out the name of a new store — it didn’t have a sign above the entrance and had instead etched the name faintly into its glass windows — when my shoe caught on a six-inch decorative planter.  I fell in slow motion, with the ChickieNob screaming, “Mooooooooooomeeeeeeeeeeee” as I tumbled forward, breaking my fall with my hands as I smashed my right knee into the tile.

Not one person stopped eating at the tables around me.  Not one person came over to see if I was okay.

The ChickieNob and I sat there for a while, and then we slowly limped into a department store where I collapsed on a bench near the high heels.  The lump on my leg was so huge that it looked like my kneecap had decided to get itself an extra backup kneecap, just in case, and set it at a jaunty angle like a beret.  (The ChickieNob whispered, “It’s a good thing you didn’t check your unshaven legs when we were sitting in the casual part of the mall and instead waited to roll up your jeans when we were sitting amongst the fancy shoes.”)

I moaned the whole ride home.  Thank you, world, for creating ice.

What was your last injury?
