#Microblog Mondays 92: Optimistic

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I am not an optimistic person, so I clicked over to Mental Floss to learn the one simple thing I can do to change almost 42 years of the same, pessimistic mindset.

It turned out to be a simple exercise you can do while brushing your teeth (click over to read it).  I haven’t tried it yet, mostly because I have a terrible feeling that my lists would devolve into super specific things like: It makes me happy when Daredevil does a back flip, when Daredevil does that thing where he kicks off the wall before slamming into someone, when Daredevil parkours up the side of a building.

And then I would think, “Oh, I should stay up and read some Daredevil!”  And then be overtired the next day, which probably just makes me even more Eyeore-ish.  In all seriousness, there are a lot of things that make me happy, but I’m not sure I could come up with 3 new ones each day.

What do you think of advice like this?  Can committing to tricks like this really change the way you process the world?

#Microblog Mondays 91: Anniversary

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

It’s the 29th anniversary of my Bat Mitzvah this week.  I commented on it aloud at dinner only because the date sticks in my mind.  The Wolvog cocked an eyebrow and said, “Do you really still celebrate that still?  I mean, now that you’re really old?”

Ouch.

But it made me think about the anniversaries I mark and the ones I don’t.  We used to celebrate our dating anniversary and our engagement anniversary, but now we just mark the wedding anniversary, and do it as low-key as possible, at that.  I mark my birthday, but I used to do my half-birthday, too.  I used to mark loss dates.  The day the twins came home from the NICU.  But all those things have faded over the years.

What anniversaries do you still mark?  Which ones have you let slip away?

#Microblog Mondays 90: What Are You Craving?

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

When I’m feeling super anxious, I crave Special K because I associate it with lunch time at home, where I’m comfortable and in my own space.  Sometimes when I travel, I bring a container of cereal with me and eat it in the hotel room.  Instantly mentally transported.

So I thought this article about food cravings was interesting.  It’s not just about wanting salty foods or sweet foods.  It’s subconsciously remembering that you ate those chips with your friends, and wanting to eat them again to remind yourself of what a good time you had that day on the beach.

Isn’t that interesting?

So what are you craving right now?  And what are your memories associated with that food that you’re trying to access by eating it?

#MicroblogMondays 89: Rings and Things

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

Remember how I couldn’t find the jacket for Harry Potter 4?  I finally bought a new copy this week so the bookshelf in the kitchen would look orderly.  I now have an extra copy of the book (actually, a 4th copy of the book), and beyond donating it, I was trying to think up something creative I could do with it.

There is a British artist who turns old books into jewelry.  I don’t think I would want to wear Book 4 — but it made me think about which book I would want turned into jewelry.  I would love to wear The Phantom Tollbooth, first and foremost.  After that, Fellowship of the Ring.  After that, The Magician’s Nephew.

What would be your top three books to wear, not read?

#MicroblogMondays 88: The Object of the Game

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

There’s a new game for the PS4 which sort of blew my mind.  It’s called Everything, and every object in the game is playable.  Meaning, you can make anything in the game the player character for the game.

Pause for a second and think about that.  Because in your life, YOU are the player character, and everything around you is seen in reference to you.  A mug is helpful to you because you can fill it with coffee that you will drink.  And the shower head is helpful to you because you can turn it on and bathe.

But what about the world from the point of view of the mug?  To the mug, you’re just a big pair of lips that touch it while it’s trying to go about its non-existence.  To the shower head, you’re just this lump standing underneath it that it’s pelting with water.

The idea that everything is playable means that you can experience everything’s point of view.  And therefore everything is of equal importance.  And nothing is the star of the show.

If you could really see the world through anything or anyone’s eyes what would you choose?
