#Microblog Mondays 112: Frideswide Day
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
This Wednesday is St. Frideswide’s feast day. We celebrate it as a family every year, usually doing something Alice-related or having a special meal or cake.
But this year, celebrating St. Frideswide Day on St. Frideswide Day isn’t really going to work. I can pull together scones for breakfast, but that’s pretty much it. A bunch of work projects are all due at the same time, so it would be really great if we could celebrate her life on Tuesday. Or Thursday. Sort of any day but that Wednesday. (Unless Hillary would like to reschedule the debate? Then we could tuck it into the evening hours.)
I feel weird celebrating a holiday not on the holiday, even though it’s a great solution to a common problem. Lots of people celebrate a holiday early or late so they can get people together or celebrate with two different groups, one after the other.
What do you think of celebrating holidays not on the actual day?

#Microblog Mondays 111: The Crown

The ChickieNob and I have been waiting forever for the BBC to release The Crown, and it will finally be here at the beginning of November. We are going to devour that series while speaking to each other in British accents and eating scones and wearing sweater sets. So excited.
But…
What gave me pause was wondering how the Queen — who is still alive — processes art made about her life. It’s one thing to have a show made about you after you’re gone, but it’s another to have your life dramatized for entertainment or educational purposes. I know she lives in the public eye, but it gave me pause to think of her bothered by (or maybe she loves it?) the show.
What do you think of biographical movies made about people while they’re still alive?

#Microblog Mondays 110: Crushed Dreams

Remember #MicroblogMondays 64 where I wrote about that hoodie that was also a back massager? Of course you remember it because you’ve been thinking about it non-stop since I wrote about it.
Um… so scratch that whole idea of it being the best invention ever because Refinery29 did a review of it, and it sounds like maybe it was too good to be true. Which is all kinds of disappointing.
This is why I’m reluctant to get too excited (or, to be honest, invest) in projects I see on Kickstarter. Sure, it sounds great, but will it be great in actuality? It’s hard to embrace things before they’re actually here. Even upcoming television shows and movies rarely turn out as good as I hope.
But we live in an age where “coming soon” begins when the product is still months or years away from release. How do we temper our excitement when everything sounds so damn good in theory?
When was the last time a highly anticipated product or book or movie lived up to your expectations?

#Microblog Mondays 109: Goodbyes
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
Today is my last day at job, and I am the last person on the editorial team. It’s been a little like the Martian for the last few weeks. I’m just planting potatoes by myself, and it’s a little lonely.
I love the site so much, and I feel lucky that I got closure and featured great content right up to the end. Before you ask, I have no clue what will happen to the site after this point, but I believe it will continue as informational support for the conference. Anyway, if we worked there together, thank you. I love working with writers, talking about writing, and learning something new every single day on the job.
I don’t want to talk about my next step right now; I want to say goodbye to a place that meant a lot to me. I think we’re conditioned to always look ahead, but I really need to look behind for a moment as I gently close the door. I am really proud of the work I did over there — that we all did over there. I will always be grateful to Denise for bringing me onto the team. I still have the original email from 2007 inviting me to work there. Denise, it was everything you promised in that original exchange.
I’m not good with goodbyes, especially to inanimate entities like websites. But I feel like I need to say goodbye to this one.

#Microblog Mondays 108: Story Setting
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
I started reading The Hopefuls by Jennifer Close, mostly because it’s set in DC. There are very few books that are not genre fiction (and usually legal or political thrillers at that) that are set in contemporary DC, and this one is particularly Washingtonish.
I like it because the characters go to restaurants I like and visit local places I enjoy. If it’s possible to feel homesick while you are still at home, this book is making me feel wistful for the place where I am right now.
I wish more books were set in my city, and I tend to gobble up books set in places I like, especially if they include familiar landmarks that are not the usual tourist sites. I’m even willing to stick with characters I don’t particularly enjoy making observations which would make me roll my eyes if spoken by an actual human just to keep seeing the city.
Are there books set in your hometown? And do you enjoy reading location-based contemporary fiction?
