#Microblog Monday 273: Love

Josh and I celebrated our 18th anniversary this weekend. 18 holds special significance in gematria because the way you write the number 18 is the same way you write the word “life” (because our letters all have a numerical value)… sort of. I mean the letters are in an opposite order, but STILL. Everyone associates 18 with “life,” hence why you get things from people who are Jewish in denominations of 18. Seriously, every Jewish adult can multiply anything by 18 in their head. It’s like a special skill you build once you reach an age when you start writing checks.

So we spent the weekend at the beach, reading and walking and eating ice cream and testing out our interest in birdwatching. You know, just living life.

I always thought that when we hit our 18th anniversary, we would do something huge like a hot air balloon ride around the world (because I’m mega-realistic). But it turns out that it’s better to just live life. Plus I’m scared of hot air balloons.

#Microblog Monday 272: Relaxation Hangover

There is a reason why I usually don’t give myself downtime. It is so much harder to get back into work after spending most of the weekend lying around in my pyjamas, reading books and watching television. And eating crap. And sleeping whenever I felt like it.

It’s like I have a relaxation hangover after imbibing too much relaxation. Whereas on a normal weekend, I imbibe a moderate amount of relaxation, so the afterward isn’t quite so drastic.

While the weekend was lovely, I’m finding it very difficult to be back in regular clothes today.

How was your weekend?

#Microblog Monday 271: Uniform

I switched a few years ago to a uniform. In the summer, I wear a black or grey t-shirt and cargo pants. In the winter, I wear a black long sleeve t-shirt and jeans.

I switch it up by adding a scarf every day. Most of the scarves are solid, so it’s just choosing which colour fits my mood. Or they’re varying lengths, so I can decided between a thin blue scarf or a plush blue scarf.

It means I never have to think about what I’m going to wear. When I pack, I just grab enough shirts and jeans for the trip and a handful of scarves. I love not having to think anymore. Or worry that a certain top won’t be clean or pants won’t fit. Is it a little boring? Yes. But the scarves are all kinds of awesome.

#Microblog Monday 270: Halloween Motivation

Halloween costume motivation lingered at a strong zero throughout the month of October. Back in September, I entertained the idea of going as Random Party Guest at Downton Abbey, but I never bought or made the dress, and now I cannot imagine sitting around outside in thin material in order to celebrate a holiday.

I need a costume that is essentially my pyjamas. Like a onesie but not a onesie because those look hard to pee in. So… my pyjamas. I need to go out as a Person About to Go to Bed.

Are you dressing up this week? What are you going as?

#Microblog Monday 269: Privacy Nihilism

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

There was an article in the New York Times about a facial recognition database, called MegaFace, that got its images off of Flickr. The images were snapshots of 700,000 people that were offered at one point under a CC license.

The database “has been downloaded by dozens of companies to train a new generation of face-identification algorithms, used to track protesters, surveil terrorists, spot problem gamblers and spy on the public at large.”

If you ever uploaded images to Flickr, your pictures could be on it. Of course, who could predict this would happen? The article kicks off with the story of a mother who uploaded a few snapshots of her kids and found them on MegaFace over a decade later.

The article talks about “privacy nihilism.”

What happened to Chloe Papa could, depending on your perspective, argue for extreme vigilance or total resignation: Who could have possibly predicted that a snapshot of a toddler in 2005 would contribute, a decade and a half later, to the development of bleeding-edge surveillance technology?

Do you think privacy is impossible in this day and age? Is it worth putting out a solid effort to maintain it?
