#Microblog Monday 292: Don’t Be That Person on April Fool’s Day

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

Every year, I hope beyond hope that people will not post phony pregnancy announcements for April Fool’s Day, and every year, I am disappointed by humanity.

But this year, really, please, skip April Fool’s Day. Not just pregnancy posts—skip COVID-19 posts. Skip posting anything that may be misconstrued. When in doubt, don’t post.

I have to spend time on the Internet on Wednesday due to my job or I’d stay offline. So please, humanity, don’t let me down this year.

#Microblog Monday 291: Delivery, Ethics, and Covid-19

I am eternally grateful to everyone who has continued to do their job through this crisis––for example, health care workers, but also grocery store employees, farmers, delivery workers, and cleaning staff. The people who are keeping the day-to-day going; making sure we have food and disinfected spaces and health care.

But I have been thinking of the ethics of it. And other people are clearly thinking about it, too. Wired magazine asked last week: “People are being encouraged to stay home to avoid exposure to the coronavirus. Should they ask others to bring them food?” Are we being kind when we ensure people have work to do? Or are we being cruel when we ask other people to take risks we’re not taking?

There is clearly no easy answer.

I will say that I truly love our Italian ice place. (Priorities, people!) They put out a call on Facebook and gave people a day or two to place orders for paid pickup (over the phone). Then they brought the pickup orders to our town so people could nip out, grab their bag, and go. It was a fantastic solution where we all met in the middle to disseminate dessert by making the transactions between people as brief as possible. Not perfect but an interesting solution.

Are you ordering out right now?

#Microblog Monday 290: Getting Rid of Stuff

We need to clean out the basement again. I am excellent at forgetting that I want to do this task (out of sight, out of mind), but Caroline Crampton inadvertently reminded me with her newsletter.

She’s the creator of the podcast Shedunnit (which is the best), and she writes an irregularly-sent newsletter about random stuff. A recent one was about taking stuff to the dump and the joy of getting rid of things you no longer need.

There is a joy in it. There is also an anxiety that I am getting rid of something I may regret getting rid of in the future. But I still need to do it. And I know I’ll feel joy in having the space.

What have you gotten rid of recently?

#Microblog Monday 289: Private Libraries

I am aware that I already belong to a library; a library that is free and has more books than I could read in a lifetime and will do an interlibrary loan for any book they don’t have in their system. But even knowing that and how much I hate to leave the house, I kind of want to belong to a private library.

Especially if there is a secret password for the door. I’ve always wanted to be part of a secret society.

I mean, yes, for $180 per year, I could also sit on my comfortable sofa with my guinea pig and at least ten new, purchased books (and quadruple that if I buy used) for the same amount. But no secret password.

Unless Linus and I create one.

#Microblog Monday 288: Overwatch

Last weekend, we surprised the Wolvog with his floating birthday and tickets to an e-sports event. It wasn’t actually a surprise because we needed his help to purchase the tickets. We couldn’t understand the ticketing system, but the Wolvog assured us that yes, the only option was 12 hours of games over two days.

12 hours.

I was quaking whenever I thought about going–I am not a fan of noise or crowds–but I went in with an open mind and LOVED it. He explained the game to us the night before and patiently answered questions while we watched. I ended up on my feet, cheering on the Washington Justice while they played against Paris and London.

If you had told me five years ago that I would be attending a two-day e-sports event, I would have told you that there was no chance. But I’m glad I went–and that he introduced us to this world–because we had the best time. It was the most female-friendly video-game-related event I have ever attended, maybe because the game itself has built in diversity on all fronts. And zero lines for the bathroom, even though the event was about 50% women. Win-win!
