#Microblog Monday 396: Goodbye, A.B.

*******

The Israeli writer, A.B. Yehoshua died last week. I found out on Facebook, which is always such an odd thing — to see the end of a life sandwiched between a post about gardening and another about graduation.

His books defined my mid-twenties. My late-twenties. My early thirties. It has been a long time since I picked up one of his books, but there was a time when he was my go-to, my touchstone, my favourite.

It’s sad to lose a writer, but I feel lucky that I still have his books.

#Microblog Monday 395: Grief as Love

I saw a quote from Ocean Vuong from NPR’s Fresh Air: “You realize that grief is perhaps the last and final translation of love. And I think, you know, this is the last act of loving someone. And you realize that it will never end. You get to do this to translate this last act of love for the rest of your life.”

What a profound thought: that grief is love. It’s an expression of love after a loss, when you can no longer express your love to that person, place, or thing in another way. And that you express your love in this way (and perhaps in other ways that you discover down the road) for the rest of your life.

#Microblog Monday 394: Labels

I saw a tweet about a new book that asks an excellent question: “Why do we label some things but not others?”

I don’t expect any language to have a word for everything, but once we see a gap in our language, why don’t we fill it? With information exchanged globally, why aren’t we looking at words that don’t exist in our own language and creating an equivalent? Things that are important get labeled — the Sami have 180 words for snow — but there can be both initially-labeled and labeled-in-retrospect words.

Something to think about.

#Microblog Monday 393: Would You Do It Tomorrow?

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

I am notorious for saying yes to things far in the future that I feel really stressed out about when the day arrives.

Austin Kleon reminded me of something I first heard about a long time ago; probably from the same David Plotz article. When someone asks you to do something, ask yourself if you would do it tomorrow. Would you not do whatever you have on tap tomorrow to do this thing instead? Or, if it were happening tomorrow, would you be happy that you’re about to do it? If not, the answer is probably no.

Or it’s no if you want future you to be less stressed.

#Microblog Monday 392: Becoming a Woman

35 years ago… I think it was 35 years ago. I’m getting fuzzy with the year. While I could look this up pretty easily, I don’t feel like moving boxes around. Anyway, 35 years-ish ago, young Melissa stood on the bimah and had her Bat Mitzvah.

The first Bat Mitzvah was in 1922, though it didn’t become commonplace until the 1960s. 1960s! Isn’t that bizarre to think about now? My generation was the first generation where it was commonplace to have a Bat Mitzvah. The only women I know in my parents’ generation who had a Bat Mitzvah did so as an adult. And one generation later, I could turn around and tutor my kids for their B’nai Mitzvah.

Change comes slowly and quickly.
