#Microblog Monday 430: Street View

Neal Agarwal makes fun things. I’ve shared a few things before, like his absurd trolley problems. In January, he released a new fun Internet toy allowing you to jump around the world seeing unusual moments captured by Google Street View.

Like a motorcycle and sidecar in the process of falling over in the Netherlands. Or glaciers in Greenland. Or the Internet Explorer grave in South Korea. You use the random button in the top right corner to jump to the next spot.

Have fun.

I recently learned about a fantastic group that shields kids entering LGBTQIA+ events called Parasol Patrol. You can volunteer in your area and show up with a rainbow umbrella to create a safe walkway for kids entering a building so they don’t see protesters outside. I started crying looking through the site because it’s unbelievable that we need something like this — that adults would scream things at kids. But then my feelings shifted to enormous gratitude that this exists.

You can volunteer or donate on the site or read more about the group via numerous news articles.

Someone put this fantastic image together, breaking out pop culture by early, middle, and late for each generation. It highlights how much the years you’re born shape your cultural touchstones. I could identify 100% of core Gen X kid culture. And most of early and late Gen X (but not all). At the same time, large chunks of Gen Y and Gen Z sounded vaguely familiar but weren’t something I had seen or used.

Take a look at the segment of your generation.

#Microblog Monday 427: COVID Changes

When the National Zoo reopened after COVID closures, they went to a timed entrance system. They were free tickets, but you had to have a pass to walk through the park. I didn’t pay much attention because I rarely went to the zoo.

But it was in the news again last week because Eleanor Holmes Norton asked the zoo to remove the pass system to make it more accessible to people who don’t have a computer and can’t sign up for the digital pass. The zoo said no, though they pointed out that they reserve a certain amount of passes for people who show up without a pass because they couldn’t access them online.

I guess I didn’t realize to check on something like that because it feels like the world has moved on with restrictions despite COVID cases being where they are.
