#Microblog Monday 576: Random Acts of Kindness

*******
It is March 9, which means that it is Random Act of Kindness Day for Thomas (Facebook group link). On this day, Kristin asks people to do a random act of kindness in her son’s name because he is no longer here to put good into the world himself. I love this explanation from a few years ago:
Sandy once said that all these acts of kindness help write Thomas’ story, since he’s not here to write it himself. I’ve always loved that idea because it means that by encouraging participation on March 9 we can still parent our invisible child—and he can still change the world.
It doesn’t have to be big. It just has to be good. Take a moment today to do something for someone else. To pay a compliment. To give someone your time or expertise. To go out of your way for another human to make them feel seen in this world. And then tell the universe that you just did that for Thomas.

#Microblog Monday 575: Streaks

A discussion about streaks made me realize how many streaks I was keeping, and while none of them feel onerous, it did give me pause. I close my rings every day on my Apple Watch, I meditate, and I read. I play 9 games before work while I drink coffee, and 9 games after dinner. I write down a single sentence about work, and in another notebook, a single sentence about my non-work life.
I clearly care about them, or I wouldn’t have tracked/kept them. But it does seem like a lot of things to keep going, writing it down like that.
Do you keep any streaks?

#Microblog Monday 574: Preservation and Destruction

I’ve written here before that I think a lot about destroying my journals. I kind of don’t want to leave them behind when I’m gone, and you kind of don’t know when you’re going to be gone. Plus, I have a lot of journals.
But at the same time, I think about digitizing the journals to preserve them. What if the pencil in my childhood journals fades? What if the books are water-damaged?
I can’t really have it both ways — destroyed AND preserved. I need to pick one or the other.

#Microblog Monday 573: Everything You Own Is Pre-trash
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

I had a thought while I was making dinner: That everything I purchase, everything I bring into my home, is pre-trash.
It may be trash within the same day. I bought the box of pasta, I made the box of pasta, I ate the box of pasta, and I threw out the box of pasta. Or it may become trash years down the road, such as worn-out socks.
But every item is just pre-trash, which makes me pause somewhat as I think about purchasing something. I tend to keep paper books unless someone wants to take them. So it’s worth buying a book because it will likely outlive me. But something that I’m not going to use (or use up)? Probably not worth bringing it into my home only to throw it out later.

#Microblog Monday 572: Cost of Travel
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

The kids have a week off where they align this summer, and I thought it would be fun for all of us to go to Venice. I got out the journal I kept the last time I was in Venice to get the name of the hotel. There was a long entry where I stressed over the cost of the place. My friend had made the reservation for us, and it would cost each of us $60 per night. I lamented that I was paying triple what we’d pay per night for the rest of the trip.
I looked up the hotel today to see the cost per night. Remember, it was $120 per night for a very nice hotel in Venice. That same hotel today? $1,132 per night. Yes, it has been 25 or so years, but that seems excessive, no?
In Rome, it was $40 per night for a whole apartment in Trastevere. A quick search on VRBO shows it will be about $540 per night for a comparable apartment.
I can’t tell if the price difference is normal inflation, supply and demand, or priced to curb tourism. In any case, we’re not going to Italy this year.
