#Microblog Monday 528: Revisiting Childhood

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

When I was little, I loved Pitfall deeply. Deeply enough to beg my mother to allow me to take a picture of my high score on the television screen and send it to Activision for a badge. While it took some coordination to play, it was all about memorizing the patterns to get all the treasures.

Someone made an online version, but while it made me so happy to see Pitfall Harry, it didn’t feel like the game anymore. I started running through the first screens, but the gold bar wasn’t where I expected it to be. And I couldn’t get keys on my computer to feel like the game controller. While it wasn’t quite as satisfying as my childhood memories of the game, I’m leaving this here in case anyone else wants to revisit Pitfall Harry.

#Microblog Monday 527: Charting a Life

I saw this and thought it was the coolest thing in the world. The person mapped their life out week by week, so you could hover on any block and see what they were doing that week of their life. Their map isn’t super detailed. Big moments get their own square (but it is cool to see them visually placed on the map in this way so you can see how long you have to go before you hit the next big square), but most of the small squares simply state where they are working or living.

Along with looking at what has happened, you can look at the map and see what milestones are still ahead of them. I would love to make something like this, though it would take a lot of time to go back through files and figure out what I was doing at any given time. I’ve been bullet journalling for many years, so I have a sentence for each day, but that is different from seeing it all on one screen; able to scan to see the time between events.

#Microblog Monday 526: Brackets

I promise that I do other things than play games.

But I play a lot of games. It’s better than doomscrolling right now.

A new favourite is Bracket City. Each day, you receive a paragraph with phrases highlighted in yellow. A mistake I made at first was thinking that you needed to tap on the yellow words to solve the clue. You don’t. You can solve any clue at any time, and it will fill the correct spot. For example,

You could type in “hand” for [kind of stand where you are upside down] or “ring” for [bad thing for your phone to do in a theater], and it will change the words in the correct spot. You keep solving until you’ve cleared all the brackets, and you’re left with something that happened on that day in history.

#Microblog Monday 525: Tabs

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

Last month, I bookmarked or jotted down notes from open tabs in my phone’s browser. I wanted to bring it down to 100 tabs, though I only succeeded in bringing the open tab count closer to 150. It is currently back up at 236.

Scrolling back through open tabs is like an archaeological dig through my brain. There are the sneakers I saw a woman wearing when we picked up takeaway. (I made ChickieNob casually walk back and forth, trying to read the tag on the back.) And the bio for an artist who had a painting I liked in a gallery. And a list of plant-based fake meat products. And a recipe for Cornish pudding. If you go back far enough, you will find tabs for things I was thinking about at least 10 years ago. Things that were important enough to leave open all this time later.

I love scrolling back and seeing what was important years ago. They are snapshots of a moment in time, an hour of wondering.

#Microblog Monday 524: And Yet Another Fun Game

Can you tell that we’re in high-distraction mode? The third game I started playing feels very close to a random guess-the-word game I used to play and stopped because it felt too hard. So I’m not sure how long I’ll stick with Betweenle, but I like that I’ve been getting the word in a few guesses.

It helps that it has to be a five-letter word vs. any random word of any length in the dictionary.

Leaving this here in case you also need a distraction.
