Josh and I both have ongoing mixtapes on our phones where we capture new songs we like or old songs we remember. We mostly listen to his mix, but every once in a while, we play mine instead.

I’ve been adding to the list for years, and my current list (because I had one before this that reached 2.5 hours of music before I started over) ran almost 12 hours. 12 hours!

I cleaned it up this weekend, moving all of the songs I normally skipped over to a new “things I used to like” list. I didn’t want to forget them entirely, but I wanted to bring the list down to things I would be happy to hear. It ended up at a trim 8.5 hours of music.

It feels wrong to delete songs off a mixtape. I never did that in the past; they were a time capsule of what interested me at the moment. But the current list feels better. I may even cut it back a little more.

I am normally NOT a fan of timed games – I prefer to relax and think and not worry about moving quickly – but Outlier is a lot of fun. You get a block of nine “things,” and need to figure out which one is not like the other. That one becomes a hint because it’s the theme of the next block of nine. For instance, if you had eight vegetables in the first group and a lemon, then lemon (and either fruits in general or terms for something that doesn’t work, etc) would become the theme of the next block.

You can only make nine mistakes, and you need to complete it before the time runs out. The nice thing is you can play the archives.

The Wolvog introduced me to the BEST game. I love it so much that I save it for after work as a way to relax at night. I love it so much that I signed up for the creator’s newsletter after playing one round. That’s how good it is.

You get a word and a bunch of clues, and you have to decide which clue fits and what the answer would be. You get a little hint on the side of the answer box with the number of letters, so there are a few you can quickly eliminate. For instance, if it’s a five-letter word, and it says to anagram it, but the answer is a four-letter word, you can confidently skip that clue. If you get stuck, they’ll give you a hint and then the answer, but it’s pretty rare that you’ll need it due to all of the other context clues you get.

Like I said on Friday, today marks the 19th anniversary of the first Friday Blog Roundup back in 2006.

What is amazing is that there are still posts I think about, so many years later. One that continues to bring me enormous comfort — and I’ve linked to it many times before — is Toddler Planet’s “ It’s Not Fair.” She wrote it about six months before she died from metastatic breast cancer.  These lines may not make sense without reading the longer parable contained in the post, but I think about them all the time: “We each get one life, one daily wage, and that’s it. The guy next door gets one life to live. The mom down the street gets one too. No one ever promised us the same life, the same opportunities, the same blessings, or the same time to live. No one ever promised that. We are promised one opportunity, one life, and how we live it is between us and our Creator (I believe). There is no comparing.”

She did a lot of amazing things while she was on this planet, and I’m eternally grateful for her writing, which put the imbalance of the world into perspective and gave a frame for considering all moments. I hope that if you are also finding this time tumultuous and upsetting, her words help ground you.

And please share what moved you. The posts you remember, so many years later.

Reading an Atlantic article about sludge (gift link) raised my blood pressure. I had the sensation of being on hold, waiting to speak to a representative so I could cross something off my to-do list. Reading about how creating frustration is part of the plan; it’s not a glitch or a problem with the system but it’s the system itself to make it as difficult as possible for you to take care of a problem made me want to quit society and move to an island inhabited only by sheep.

Someone should make a database of sludge-free companies with excellent customer service when there is a problem. So far, the only one I can think of is Chewy.
