#MicroblogMondays 17: First Date Selfie
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
Apparently, first date selfies are a “thing.” As in, kids today are taking a picture together on their first date and posting it to Instagram with the tag #firstdateselfie.
It took me many months to work up the courage to take a picture with Josh. I mean, taking a picture together — that was serious shit. You didn’t just take a picture with someone you had just started dating. Telling someone that you wanted a picture of them meant something. It meant you wanted to show your friends what the person looked like. It meant you wanted to look at a picture of them when you were apart.
I mean, I wanted a picture on the first date, but I would have never had the guts to take a picture.
The technology certainly existed back then — I had a point-and-shoot camera with film in my purse at all times — but I would have never had the guts to suggest taking a picture together on our first date.
What about you? I think we would all want the picture in retrospect, but would you have the courage to ask to take one?

#MicroblogMondays 16: Give or Receive?
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
An interesting breakdown in holiday commercials is how many show a person receiving something they want (I’ve been good all year and now I get a car!) and how many show someone giving the perfect gift (I know you so well that I got you the perfect necklace!). My completely unscientific count shows more commercials of people happily giving than ecstatically receiving. Though I think if we were all brutally honest, we’d admit that it’s sort of more fun to receive. It makes me wonder what the psychology is behind the advertisements: what makes people buy more items if they see people happily giving than happily receiving?
Don’t get me wrong: it’s fun to give, but how many people choose to do a community service project to celebrate their birthday (other than Josh) and how many people want to sit back and be pampered and get presents?
So here’s the scenario (and be honest): would you rather host a blog giveaway for a really great item that you don’t own and know you made someone else really happy, or would you rather win the giveaway and get to keep that item forever? Me? I think right now that I’d want to win more than I’d want to host.

#MicroblogMondays 15: Favourite Colours
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
I’m not really surprised with my score on the colour test because I already knew that colour affects me deeply. I’m aware this will make me sound like the narrator of The Rosie Project, but I use a straw in my iced coffee every morning, and I have to choose very carefully because the colour of the straw affects me for the rest of the day. For instance, I can only write if I’m using a blue or red straw, and only those shades of blue or red that come in that box. The blue is hex code 3399CC and the red is hex code CC0000.
Yes… I know how this makes me sound.
There are colours that make me happy such as CC6633 and others that fill me with dread such as CCFF99.
So peruse the colour picker and let me know one colour that affects you emotionally: makes you happy, sad, fearful, etc.
P.S. The Wolvog and I like to whisper hex codes to each other, just luxuriating in the idea of various shades.

#MicroblogMondays 14: Best Words
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
I have a Mallen Streak — a two-inch shock of white in the front of my hair a la Rogue in X-Men. (Or the Bride of Frankenstein, though Rogue sounds a bit cooler.) I don’t love it, but I don’t know what I want to do with it so for the time being, I’m leaving it.
What I do love is that it has a name. That we have a word for a strange clump of white hair that inexplicably forms (Mallen Streak) or the space between two letters (kern) or giving someone a loving look (belgard). For every word that doesn’t exist though we wish it did, there are thousands upon thousands of cool words that have fallen into disuse.
So teach us a cool word or your favourite word, even if you think it may be a common one that everyone knows. Sometimes we just need to hear it again to remember to use it.

#MicroblogMondays 13: Keep or Toss
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

Lifehacker had a timely (for me) article on how to decide whether to keep or part with sentimental items. You ask yourself whether you’d buy it again at full price, if the object has happy memories associated with it, of if you’d still want it if someone you disliked gave it to you. All fine questions, though I’d personally never use them to cull out the mess in my storage room.
It was timely because I had reason to go through three boxes of old papers this week — stuff from high school until graduate school. Old stories, autograph pages that were supposed to go in yearbooks, letters, notes that friends passed me in the hall, photographs. None of Lifehacker’s questions obviously applied to those papers.
If Lifehacker showed up at my house and told me I could only keep ten things, those three boxes of paper would make the cut. As would photographs of the twins. The family tree. The most important things to me seem to be made out of paper. What tangible objects would you save if Lifehacker told you that you had to clean up your storage spaces?
