Decorations

Before I got a house, I always thought I’d be the sort of person who decorated said house for holidays. Maybe I was more of an indoor-decoration sort of person; I couldn’t see myself storing an eight-foot skeleton or blow-up spider or orange-and-black lights. But I thought there would at least be a few uncarved pumpkins dotting the surfaces.

There were for a year or two, and when the twins were super little, we had window stickers for various holidays that they put up. But by the time they were in Kindergarten, we had stopped most of the decorations, and I’m not even sure where they went. It’s almost like they scurried away because they sensed my lack of commitment.

I’m not sure why I don’t decorate for any holiday. I mean, we celebrate holidays. We have food that I make or activities that we do. But I don’t put up decorations to mark the time of year. Nothing outside the house, but also nothing inside the house.

I could always do this. Literally nothing is stopping me. But I still don’t do it, even though I appreciate the effort that other people go through to make the world a little happier.

Do you decorate for holidays?

I don’t NOT decorate, but I don’t go over the top, if you know what I mean. I probably would have made more effort (particularly for Halloween) if we’d had kids, but since we don’t…? When we had the house, I had some spooky Halloween cutouts of black cats & bats that I’d put up in the front window, and a wreath for the door… we’d carve a jack o’lantern every year (something I always loved to do as a kid) and set it out on our porch to invite trick-or-treaters to stop in, and that was about it. We don’t get any trick-or-treaters in our condo building, so I don’t do anything in the way of Halloween decorating these days. I still have a fake pumpkin that lights up, inside in a box in the storage locker. I might dig that out someday to put on the kitchen counter in October for us to enjoy, but that’s about it.

I do a little more for Christmas. We always put up a tree, and an advent calendar, and I have a bunch of family Christmas photos in seasonal frames that I set out. And I put any photo cards I receive up on the refrigerator for the season.

When we had the house I had a garland that I twined around the bannister & spindles of the stair railing. And we put up outside lights for a few years (remember icicle lights??) — but it was not dh’s favourite thing to do, so we gradually got out of the habit. Our building now has rules about decorations on your balcony & door — you can put up a wreath if you use a wreath holder that goes over the door frame; you can’t hammer in a nail or alter the door in any way. I do have a wreath in the storage locker, but I have yet to dig it out!
