#Microblog Monday 573: Everything You Own Is Pre-trash

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I had a thought while I was making dinner: That everything I purchase, everything I bring into my home, is pre-trash.

It may be trash within the same day. I bought the box of pasta, I made the box of pasta, I ate the box of pasta, and I threw out the box of pasta. Or it may become trash years down the road, such as worn-out socks.

But every item is just pre-trash, which makes me pause somewhat as I think about purchasing something. I tend to keep paper books unless someone wants to take them. So it’s worth buying a book because it will likely outlive me. But something that I’m not going to use (or use up)? Probably not worth bringing it into my home only to throw it out later.

Are you also doing #MicroblogMondays? Add your link below. The list will be open until Tuesday morning. Link to the post itself, not your blog URL. (Don’t know what that means? Please read the three rules on this post to understand the difference between a permalink to a post and a blog’s main URL.) Only personal blogs can be added to the list. I will remove any posts connected to businesses or sponsored posts.

Yes, that’s a very good reminder. I’ve been a bit bad with food waste lately. I bought a pumpkin wedge a while ago, thinking I could use it in a curry, or make bacon, feta and pumpkin pasta, but didn’t get around to it and the pumpkin went mouldy. Sigh. We don’t buy a lot of new things these days. One of the good things about getting old. But as I look around the room where I am now, there’s a lot of pre-trash. Ugh.

Yes! I’m a lot better than I used to be about hanging onto stuff (clearing out a house before moving into a smaller space was an excellent reminder…!) — but I could still do better. And I still buy way too much new stuff that doesn’t get used, or used enough. Sigh…

I try to make things last forever. And I’m trying to consume less. But retail therapy, man…it’s definitely a high. Sigh…
