Fixing Things

While my mending is not always as neat as newness, my dislike of change is so enormous that I would rather have some uneven stitches on my shirt than buy a new one. A case in point: I recently repaired the iPad cover with superglue so I wouldn’t have to switch the colour to a new one. (I also wanted to avoid going to the mall or ordering one online. So maybe it’s more than just change.)

I saw this on someone’s site, and I apologize because I don’t remember where. I’m passing it along in case you are equally passionate about fixing your own things. It’s a fantastic guide on how to fix things and when to ask for help from someone else.

If I know something will be hard to replace, I’ll try and fix it. I learned from my parents – we didn’t have money to replace things easily, and waste was frowned upon. I’ve even been known to darn the occasional sock (!!!). Right now I have a pair of yoga pants waiting for me to fix them, and I’m about to recover an ottoman that was ripped through general wear and tear. Oh yes, a seam that’s come undone on a cushion as well. Lots of mending to do. Though I wouldn’t fix an ipad cover, because there are such nice ones now. My last iPad I got one with a Van Gogh print on it – I LOVE it.

PS. I’ve recently had a minor social media addiction of watching sewing/mending videos. The precision is very comforting! They make it look so easy.

I am terrible at sewing, so I won’t repair clothes. I will upcycle some of them – I like making blankets and stuff out of my old sweaters (where my sewing skills don’t matter because I will be the only one to see or use the item). I prefer to fix what I can, but a lot of things will last if you do regular maintenance on them. Like…pulling out the refrigerator to vacuum all the coils and fans and stuff. It helps the machinery to work more easily if it’s not fighting dirt. My husband was a major DIYer, so I have picked up some things from his knowledge.
