Tiles for Everything

ChickieNob texted me from school to ask about a brass rubbing she made when she was eight years old at St Martin in the Fields at the London Brass Rubbing Center. It fits perfectly with her senior capstone project. I knew exactly where it was, and I told her I’d grab it so she could look at it when she got home.

I ran downstairs and remembered that we had moved the art when we got the new sofa. No worries — all the art would be together, and it was a lot of framed paintings, so it would be easy to quickly locate the tube with the brass rubbings in the storage room.

Except they weren’t there. And then, I started to second guess whether that was where we stored the picture. This launched an on-again, off-again march through the house, opening drawers, returning to cabinets, and searching through boxes. I tried standing on a chair in different rooms to see the space from a different angle. I tried shining a flashlight onto shelves.

I know you can attach a tile to important objects so you can find them, but I need a tile for every item in the house. I know I’ll find the rubbings many months or years from now when I’m cleaning out a random box. But right now, it’s really frustrating to know they are somewhere under this roof but completely inaccessible because I can’t remember where I put them.

Ooh – I love a good treasure hunt! When I have time…

Good luck – I hope you find it soon.

I’m usually very well organized and have a good memory and know where I can lay my hands on stuff — but every now & then, I’m stumped, and it drives me nuts…! :p

I had a cardboard box full of old diaries & journals, dating from the time I was 7 through university, in the closet at the room that was originally mine when I lived with my parents for a year before I got married. That was quite a while ago, to be sure, but the box is no longer in the closet and I have no idea where it is now. It’s the one thing from my parents’ house I really want to keep. It might possibly have gotten moved down into my parents’ crawl space?? We’ve cleaned out that closet (and several others) and we culled a bunch of stuff from the crawl space several years back, and so far, haven’t found it. I don’t think my mother would toss it without opening it and letting me know what was inside, and my sister has promised me she’ll save it for me if she runs across it when I’m not there, but so far…??

I just bought two Tiles to try out for our trip home — one for each suitcase (even though I think we’re bringing carry-ons). I like the idea. 🙂

I always learn about the most fascinating places from your posts. Adding “London Brass Rubbing Center” to next UK trip wish list.

Fingers cross you find the rubbing. Losing things drives me batty, but there’s another level of madness when you misplace things and have zero memory of the event.

That sounds so frustrating, Mel. The rubbing itself sounds like a treasure, but I know I’d be going bonkers trying to think of all the places it could be… Hopefully, you find it/or zen soon!

I hope you find it! That is the most frustrating thing, when you know a thing exists but can’t find where it is. We have a box from moving like that — it has the ashes of our greyhound and Ove-Gloves oven mitts in it. A weird combo, but it’s one of those things that has gone missing and it’s GOT to be here somewhere! Love the idea of the brass rubbings.
