#Microblog Monday 377: Punk Rock Memories

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I have never watched a football game, and I don’t plan on starting, but I really like the name DC chose for the football team — the Commanders. It fits. I will likely call them the Commies. And like Josh, I will always think of Commander Salamander — a now-defunct DC institution of my childhood.

The naming sent us down a rabbit hole of Commander Salamander memories. The Manic Panic. The stud bracelets. The racks of leather pants. I miss that store so much.

Are you also doing #MicroblogMondays? Add your link below. The list will be open until Tuesday morning. Link to the post itself, not your blog URL. (Don’t know what that means? Please read the three rules on this post to understand the difference between a permalink to a post and a blog’s main URL.) Only personal blogs can be added to the list. I will remove any posts that are connected to businesses or are sponsored post.

I have to admit, it sounds a little too “Handmaid’s Tale” for my liking…! But better than the old name, certainly!

Never heard of Commander Salamander — but when I read the story I realized it was a local store. (Sounds like a comic book character!)

Loribeth is hilarious, now I just see Commander Salamander in Gilead. That sounds like a cool store — I feel like in Rochester we have something somewhat similar in Aaron’s Alley, but I don’t really recall anything like that from my youth. Maybe Hot Topic is as close as I got, and I considered that a “too cool for me” store in the mall. Manic Panic — I loved that on other people but never had the guts myself. I love that you’re going to call the football team the Commies.

Yes, the name is a bit militaristic for me, but now also Handsmaidy too! lol I love though that you have a different take on it. And so hard to believe they kept the other name for so long.

I’m impressed you’ve gotten this far without ever watching a football game! I saw the name Commanders and thought The Handsmaid Tale too. Apropos for a dying patriarchy… lol.

Don’t know who Commander Salamander is. “Commander” just makes me think of going commando. I LOVE football. No matter what they’re called, they’ll be a major rival to my beloved (not to mention, beleaguered) NY Giants.
