#Microblog Monday 363: Fake Meat Squeamishness

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I’ve written before about my fake meat squeamishness. Most of these Beyond Meat or Impossible products feel too real. They make me feel panicked after I eat them, even though I rationally know that they’re not real meat. But they feel very real to me.

At the same time, I love Morningstar bacon. I love it with the intensity of a thousand suns. And I love Beyond Meat breakfast sausage links. And their bratwurst. We probably end up having them alone or in something every other week.

But this new Impossible pork? It really squicks me out. I know it makes no sense, and I’d probably be fine ordering it in a restaurant. But I haven’t been mentally able to bring the Impossible beef patties into the house. It’s something about seeing it uncooked that makes me feel woozy.

Are you also doing #MicroblogMondays? Add your link below. The list will be open until Tuesday morning. Link to the post itself, not your blog URL. (Don’t know what that means? Please read the three rules on this post to understand the difference between a permalink to a post and a blog’s main URL.) Only personal blogs can be added to the list. I will remove any posts that are connected to businesses or are sponsored post.

I’m not going to pretend I understand how you feel. Or that I understand why something that is fake meat needs to pretend to bleed. That’s just weird, right? So if it “squicks” you out, then stay away from it! And go eat and enjoy your bacon instead. Lol

I totally understand! I love morningstar bacon and sausage and chik patties. I’ve tried the impossible and beyond stuff and I don’t really care for it. I’m actually more nervous to eat it in a restaurant because what if they mix it up with actual meat and I don’t know the difference because it’s already so realistic? I prefer the morningstar and Boca and gardein and garden burger brands that have been around for ages rather than the new, overpriced, “bleeds red” trendy fake meats. But, I’m also for anything that gets people to eat less meat, so I’m glad they are an option and people are excited about it.

My 18yo step son joined our family last month. He is big on meat (and a bit squeamish about “vega stuff”) So after reading this I found we have beyond meat in Dutch supermarkets as well. tonight we’ll try the sausages. (I’m all for eating less meat, he is all about protein to build muscle, I am hoping we will find a compromise that makes everyone happy)
Because I am still adjusting to an extra family member that eats as much as his father, myself and our 8 yo combined. I know he is almost 2 meters tall (what is that, almost 7ft? or something crazyanyway, even though I am 6 ft myself)

Yeah…there’s something about them that bother me as well. I haven’t tried the breakfast sausages though. I like the MS “bacon” as well, not too big on MS since they changed so many of their recipes. The black bean burger is still my go-to.

Yep, like Jennifer said, these are targeted at meat eaters not vegan/veg people. They don’t make me squeamish. My household prefers beyond meat to impossible. We still live nova spicy chili burgers too. My husband really liked Morningstar bacon back when we were only veg. I’m impatiently waiting for them to make this product 100% plant based like they have most of their other products (like corn dogs, 🤤).

Ok my phone did some interesting autocorrects. I meant to say we love Boca spicy chik burgers.

A friend of mine who has been a vegetarian since her teens told me that she won’t eat the Morningstar Farms sausage patties because they taste too much like actual sausage made from meat. I agree with other commenters who point out that most of these products are geared toward meat eaters.

I eat meat and like the Impossible patty, but I’d also eat a burger, and cook ground beef semi-regularly, so it makes sense that they don’t gross me out.

I’ve tried a couple of the Beyond Meat/Impossible type substances, and while they don’t taste terrible and their texture is not bad, I still know I’m not eating meat and they gross me out. I don’t care for them, but my daughter prefers them to ground beef, so I will cook it occasionally. Then I wonder…those are highly processed foods, so what is the cost/benefit ratio nutrition-wise of substituting? Sigh…just gonna have some more Doritos and not worry about it.

So interesting! Humans have to figure out a way to wean off meat. I am still an omnivore. I am very interested in reducing my meat consumption, but I prefer to just skip it instead of trying to pretend something is what it is not (a beef burger). I see this as going two ways…I just eat the portobello burger, or no one tells me they subbed the beef for a meat alternative and I happily eat in ignorance. When the cicadas were out, I talked with a friend about how protein packed some bugs were (and how plentiful they are on our planet) and I figured ground up bugs will be another protein powder-like substance for the future. I miiight also eat them very well prepared, seasoned, and fried 😆
