“If We Love, We Grieve.”

Nick Cave wrote a beautiful letter to a fan about grieving the loss of his son, Arthur. And it starts with a profound thought:

It seems to me, that if we love, we grieve. That’s the deal. That’s the pact. Grief and love are forever intertwined. Grief is the terrible reminder of the depths of our love and, like love, grief is non-negotiable.

You can also listen to the letter.

I just thought this was such a stunning thought, perfectly capturing why we feel loss so deeply. It’s the inverse of that love.

I don’t know if you do Marvel but Vision’s “What is grief, if not love persevering?” line hit me in the same way.

It’s so true. If we love, we grieve. If we grieve, we’ve been lucky to love.
