#Microblog Monday 342: Team Hotel

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

Sometimes I entertain the idea that we could be vaccinated mid-summer and feel comfortable going to a beach, with masks. I know I am in the minority (maybe not?), but I’m not really comfortable with house rentals. I’m moderately uncomfortable with agency house rentals, and I’m more uncomfortable with AirBnB rentals.

I’m a hotel person. I like knowing what I’m going to get. I like knowing someone is on-site if things go wrong. I like meeting other people in the common areas. I just like hotels.

But rentals feel like a safer bet right now. It depends on the hotel, and it depends on the rental, but being alone in your own space feels safer than having a room in a much larger space.

I’m trying to not be such a hotel person in my head on the off-chance that we get vaccinated, can go on a short trip, but still want to mitigate risk as much as possible.

Are you also doing #MicroblogMondays? Add your link below. The list will be open until Tuesday morning. Link to the post itself, not your blog URL. (Don’t know what that means? Please read the three rules on this post to understand the difference between a permalink to a post and a blog’s main URL.) Only personal blogs can be added to the list. I will remove any posts that are connected to businesses or are sponsored post.

My husband is a hotel person too. I convinced him to do a VRBO once, and we had a bad experience. This just confirmed the bias he already had against that option.

Hotel person too…unless I can stay with friends or family. Hotels probably have really good rates right now.

We have always been rental people and now dietary restrictions make access to a full kitchen essential on any vacation. We LOVE Air BnB. We are careful to rent from well-established hosts with lots of good reviews and we’ve never had a bad experience. It’s so much easier to have a bedroom(s) for the kids, especially at night. We’ve had far more bad experiences in hotels, especially with regards to noise.

A good listing shows you exactly what you’re getting with the photos. We also rent a lot of cottages and I don’t much see the difference between renting a cottage and renting an apartment or house in the city. The kids really love having the home base in cities we frequently return to (when visiting relatives).

Not going anywhere anytime soon (my kids won’t be vaxxed u til probably early 2022), but I’ve always been a hotel person. I’ve read enough stories of people being across the country/world and finding their rental bug infested etc. with no recourse. We usually get a hotel condo to have a kitchen.

Now with covid and the realization there could be future pandemics, I don’t think I’ll ever do Airbnb etc…. I would trust a (chain) hotel to be more worried about covid protocols (eg air out 72 hours between guests) than some rando renting their house…

We tend to be hotel people too. I might be willing to try a rental in some circumstances, but I’m pretty sure dh wouldn’t, for the same reasons you & others list. Although, come to think of it, we did stay at a very posh b&b in Niagara-on-the-Lake for our 20th wedding anniversary — and dh actually found it & suggested we try it! It was a retired couple from the city and I think they built the house specifically with the idea of running a b&b in mind, because there was one wing where the guests stayed and another for the family, and we had our breakfast in the common area between them. The wife was something of a gourmet cook and the breakfasts were amazing, and they recommended and made reservations for us at some very nice restaurants in town. It’s not listed anywhere anymore, though. I suspect they may have sold it.

I like both, depending on the place, situation, etc. I love smaller, boutique hotels, and generally don’t like huge hotels though use them on occasion. I can certainly understand your reticence to go to hotels post-COVID or tail-end COVID. I like self-contained accommodation like airbnbs/bookabach/holiday rentals etc either in remote places or where there are lots of stores/markets/restaurants where we can eat nearby. We did our three months in Italy (back in 2013) entirely by airbnb, and loved that because we had so much time and needed the space. As Turia said, a good listing should give you all the info, and should show that hosts are well-established and that a place has good reviews.

I totally agree with Mali. Hotels are great. Rentals are great. It all depends on the situation.

If I’m going on a relatively short trip and want a more luxurious experience: hotel all the way. If I’ll be staying for an extended period of time and want to live more like a local: rental.

I like inns — like a bed-and-breakfast but less creepy and invasive feeling. I like that community thing but not too much. However, we’re looking into a VRBO it something for the summer ourselves, as we’ll both be vaccinated by June, if we feel comfortable to visit Maine and Bryce’s parents. Still not sure we’ll feel comfortable. It’s so tricky. I’ve never done a rental (as an adult), always hotels or inns or b&bs. I didn’t think of that point… If something goes wrong there’s people on site for hotel. Up a creek for a rental most of the time.
