The 17-Year Cicadas

People have been posting memes for weeks about how excited they are that 2020 is over. Woohoo! It’s 2021! Whereas I have been dreading 2021 for 17 years.

2021 is the year of the 17-year cicadas.

This May (or late April… or early June… we won’t know until we know), millions… billions… trillions of Brood X cicadas will emerge out of the ground, covering the trees until you can’t see the bark. They will cover pretty much the whole East Coast and chunks of the Midwest. 15 states in total.

I’ve been worrying about this since 2004—the last time the cicadas were here. If I wasn’t already staying at home, I would choose during that time to stay at home. So… yeah… we have that to look forward to in five months. Cheers to 2021.

In Chicago the huge brood is in 2022. I remember how bad it was when I was a kid. I am NOT looking forward to that.

I enjoy cicadas, but in moderation. So you think they’ll be the big brood in western NY? Thanks for the heads up so I don’t attribute it to End Times.

I am unimpressed with 2021 so far and this does not endear it to me further.

Ew, no! This may be the one thing I regret leaving South Dakota for New York over. Thanks for the warning.

Huh, interesting. I had no idea.
Any chance they’ll somehow kill off the Spotted Lanternfly?

I am going to do the annoying Pollyanna thing – Brood X showing up is as a good thing, because it means Nature is proceeding as normal, no matter what stupid little humans are doing to it….
