Haircuts on the House
I made a list in my bullet journal of all the things one needs to have on-hand if there is ever another extended shelter-in-place. We were mostly in good shape due to my natural state of emergency preparedness. (For example, I carry a first aid kit on me whenever we leave home. Why? I don’t know. But it seems like a good idea.) We won’t be in great shape if this goes on for another three months or more, but that’s not what this post is about. This post is about the list I’m keeping and my obsession with everyone’s hair.
ChickieNob and I both have long hair. We were overdue for a haircut before this, but it’s not like you’d know with a quick glance. We also have the ability to tie up our hair and hide the fact that it’s a mess right now. I’ve never dyed my hair, so there will not be a shocking colour reveal. All in all, the women are in good shape.
But Josh and Wolvog both have short hair, and their need for a haircut was growing clearer by the second. By the millisecond. They were long overdue for a haircut.
So I watched haircut tutorials on YouTube—the comb-over-scissors technique looked do-able while the clipper action was way beyond my abilities. I’m not saying that I could shape it or make it look good. But I could make it look shorter. Josh bought me a pair of hair cutting scissors and a comb that looked like the one owned by the barber in the video. I was ready for this.
Until he sat down in the backyard, a towel around his shoulders.
It is really nerve-wracking to have someone else’s hair in your hands. Even though he reassured me that it was just hair, it would grow back, I didn’t want to doom him to weeks of awkward Zoom calls. But I took a deep breath and started snipping. I will never be able to get a job doing this for a living, but it didn’t look terrible. It was still a little too long, but it definitely looked neater. He said we’d try again next week and keep going shorter.
The Wolvog has told me there will never be a day—not even if this goes through next fall—when he allows me to try something with his hair. Apparently too long is a better option than anything his mother could do.
He may be correct.

You’re brave! My husband and son all normally sport short haircuts. I don’t have plans to attempt haircuts on any of them any time soon.
The one and only time I’ve ever cut someone else’s hair didn’t end well: I cut my sister’s bangs once when I was 11 and she was 9. I cut them crooked, and in attempting to even them up, ended up cutting them WAY too short. As luck would have it, we were scheduled for our annual studio portrait shoot the next day, so my errors have been memorialized for all to see. 🙂
Steve just shaved his. And offered to do the same for I., who said, effectively, no way. He and the Wolvog may have matching hair-no-cuts at some point soon …
We all got a haircut shortly before this…my husband is due though since it’s been over a month. Not sure what we’re gonna do or if he’d let me cut it. I like his hair much better short…
Good thing I do my own roots…no disruption there.
I’m laughing at the Wolvog. I think he’s wise beyond his years! And that’s not a comment on your hair-cutting abilities – you’re brave to even suggest it. And yes, I have short hair, so I’m not sure how long my current cut will last – it’s been two months since my last trim.
And the lockdown has me thinking whether I should use this opportunity to go grey. I’m not sure what to think.

I’m all set in that I also don’t color and I trim only once or twice a year. I’m high maintenance in some ways, but not in appearance. I’m good, but the men in our house have succumbed to my daughter with the electric trimmer.
There is no one qualified to trim/shape my daughter’s hair. She’s the one waiting it out like the Wolvog.
I started cutting my husband’s hair about 15 years ago and we’ve never looked back. I just use clippers, and it’s pretty hard to mess up that badly. He does his own hair now because I don’t have as much time as I used to. So glad you took the plunge and it went well!
I just got my hair cut 6 months ago. I’m good for another year.
My husband cuts his own hair and tries to make me help. I’m supposed to clean up the edges and his neck. I cannot do anything straight, even if I have a ruler. So that’s always fun.
My daughter had been reminding me to get an appointment for her to get her hair trimmed. I never got around to it. She’s probably irritated with me, but she’s been growing her hair out anyway.
I stopped colouring my hair a few years ago, so no issues there. But we are currently two weeks overdue for trims, and it’s already driving me nuts. :p Dh actually used my NAIL SCISSORS to trim away a few sections that were bugging him.
Our hairdresser is going to get a VERY big tip the next time we see her…!
