Lost and Found
I hate losing things.
I even hate it when other people lose things.
I was once traveling in Spain with a friend when she lost a watch with sentimental value. We were having a hard time at that point in the trip because we were both sick, and we had a miserable time in Córdoba.
We returned to the train station to leave the city, and I told my friend that we should check the lost and found because we first noticed the watch was missing when we entered the city a few days earlier. What if someone found it on a train? My friend thought this was a terrible idea; what were the chances that someone turned in a watch? It was a waste of time to ask.
But she humoured me and watched me pantomime a lost watch at the station desk. “Oro? Plata?” were the only two words I knew in Spanish that applied to this situation. The man looked up and said, “Si!” He reached under the desk AND PULLED OUT HER WATCH.
It was probably the best moment of the whole trip.
The moral of the story is “always ask.”
Even if you’re outside of Japan, which has the most amazing-sounding lost-and-found system… ever.

I lost my driver’s license while hiking in Zion National Park. I never thought I’d see it again, but I left my info at the lost and found. Someone turned it in a few days later. The park emailed me that it was found and mailed it back to my home address!
I lost my FitBit in Disneyland in May 2018, on or near the Matterhorn. In the afternoon, as we were getting ready to leave the park for the day, I went to lost and found at main entrance, and lo and behold, someone had turned it in.
Right now I have misplaced a letter in my house that I need to find ASAP, and it’s been driving me nuts. UGH

Some years ago I hid a hard drive when we went away on a long holiday. I still can’t find it! lol
Then, about three years ago, I lost a favourite ear-ring from a pair my husband had given me. I either lost it in a friend’s car, or outside a restaurant. We looked around the restaurant, and my friends looked in their car, but no luck. I mourn that ear-ring regularly!
Aw how nice she got her watch back! Losing things drives me mad.

I lost a ring my mom gave me recently. I knew it was somewhere in the house and hoped it hadn’t accidentally gotten thrown in the trash. I was patient and within about 10 days it turned up. Yay!
I left my mom’s camera in a cab in Florence in 1993. She loved that camera and was not terribly happy with the replacement I bought for her. She would be greatly amused by the omnipresence of the mobile phone camera.
I lost one set of car/house keys in the back yard somewhere about 10 years ago. Still haven’t come across them – even with the metal detector.
I found someone’s glasses case in a cart at the grocery store the other day. I turned them in at the desk, so I hope they came back to get them.
