Interview in Triplicate
I am I-don’t-know-who-Billie-Eilish-is years old. I know she’s a singer, but I don’t know what she sings.
The point is that you don’t need to know who Billie Eilish is to find the Vanity Fair interview video fascinating. “Vanity Fair has time capsuled Billie Eilish’s responses to the same questions for the last three years and tracked the almost-18-year-old’s swift rise to pop super stardom.” The magazine interviewed her three years in a row and ran the interviews side-by-side:
You don’t need to watch the whole thing, but jump into the first two or three minutes to get a gist of the layout. She answers the same questions each year, sometimes looking back and commenting on her previous answers.
The answers change (sometimes) drastically because her life has changed drastically year over year. The average person probably wouldn’t show deep changes over the course of 12 months, but I think this would be fascinating to do in five year intervals on the same date, answering the same questions and looking back on all of your previous answers.
It’s a little bit like a video version of Loribeth’s “Right Now” posts. It’s watching a life lived but also capturing a mind’s thoughts.

I know who Billie Eilish is but only because one of my sons told me and played me a snippet of one of her songs. I was unimpressed, but they like her music.
The comment I wrote disappeared into the ether when I hit “submit,” so, trying again…! 😉 I only know who Billie Eilish is because of the recent kerfuffle over the interview where she confessed she had no idea who Van Halen was. That seems unfathomable to me — but then I listen almost exclusively to classic rock, so I most certainly know who Van Halen is (I saw them in concert back in the early 1980s, with David Lee Roth) but am not especially “up” on Billie & her contemporaries. Anyway, I agree, it’s fun to compare answers to the same questions over time! Thanks for the shoutout for my blog!
I did something like this a few years ago. After our infertility diagnosis for the first tine and during pregnancy iirc. It was interesting.

My daughter got into Billie Eilish in 2017 and I really liked her music (especially compared to other pop music), so I have been faintly aware of her rise. Love this side-by-side meta-retrospective.
I am a bit aware of Billie Eilish, she was a “if you like this artist, you’ll like this”. However, I only saw and noticted it because I was looking to see who the acts were at a festival I was going to attend last summer. I actually liked Billie Eilish (a few songs) more than the person who was going to perform, but still not a daily listen.
I do like the idea of this video. It’s kind of fun to see. I ask my kids a set of 20 questions on their birthday. And plan to give the answer to them at a later date. It’ll be fun to see how their answers change as they grow.
