#Microblog Monday 253: Bad Movie Club

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

Back in college, my friends and I had a bad movie club. Everyone went to the video store and chose what they thought would be the worst movie. And then we’d watch them back-to-back all night, and vote at the end over who had done the best job choosing the worst film. This is how I saw four of the nine Children of the Corn movies.

Bad films are in the eye of the beholder. People hate my favourite film: Jeffrey. Maybe it’s not my favourite film anymore, but it was for a very long time, and it’s exactly for this reason: catharsis. I cry so hard watching that film/play. I was horrified when someone labeled it a bad film. Bad film? It is my favourite film. How can it be bad? I feel the same way about Love, Actually. I know it makes some people throw up in their mouth, but I love watching it every winter.

Spill: what is your favourite “bad” film?

I don’t know if I have any favourite bad movies. I do like Love, Actually when it is replayed at Christmas too though. The scenes at the airport at the beginning and end remind me of scenes Qantas used to use on their screens as you arrived at a destination, back when I was travelling a lot for business. They always made me feel a bit weepy, especially if it was the beginning of a longer business trip. (Did I ever mention we were trying to conceive and suffering pregnancy losses when I was travelling a lot, so perhaps felt a bit more emotional?)

Well…for many, many years, mine has been “Forget Paris”. It’s a 1995 rom-com with Billy Crystal and Debra Winger, where Billy Crystal is an NBA ref and Winger is an airline executive. It got pretty mixed reviews at the time. There’s a scene where Crystal – having a horrible day – winds up throwing every player out of the game. Sometimes, when I’m having one of those days, I actually will think of that scene, smile, and remind myself not to “throw everyone out of the game”.

It also has one of the most heartbreakingly real infertility scenes I’ve viewed. For one, there’s a great scene where Crystal’s character is sitting in “the room” at an infertility clinic and, uh, struggling to perform. It’s one of the few times I’ve seen the male side of IVF portrayed, and while there are plenty of inaccuracies and bits, the tone is pretty spot on (down to the friends narrating the story saying ridiculous things about why the couple is having issues conceiving). After the IVF, the next scene shows Crystal holding a baby, but it turns out they’re at the hospital visiting friends and the IVF failed. In a darkened hospital hallway, Winger’s character says that she’s tired. She can’t keep doing this. The film mentions that they looked at adoption but with their jobs/travel, it didn’t pan out. Spoiler: the movie doesn’t end with a baby.

It’s still my go-to “bad movie”. But now it’s both a laugh out loud *and* a cry real tears deal.

I love that movie too! That one scene, where she walks into the vet’s office with the pigeon glued to her head, makes me laugh really hard every time. “Uh, your pet’s name??”

* I first saw the film around 2001 – long, long before infertility was a presence in my life.

That’s easy. I have written about this several times on my own blog, I think, but my favourite “guilty pleasure”/bad movie(s) would be any one of the Beach Party movies from the early/mid-1960s, with Frankie Avalon & Annette Funicello (Beach Party, Bikini Beach, Muscle Beach Party, Beach Blanket Bingo, etc.). I first saw them at the Saturday matinee at the local theatre when I was a kid (admission: 50 cents), and they still show up on TV now & then (also, I have the DVD box set, lol). By today’s standards they are corny, sexist, cliched…. but I love them, lol.

I read the article you referenced… I saw the “Lost Horizon” musical when I was a kid too & loved it, although I recognize today just how bad it was, lol.

Ooooh, that sounds so fun! Bryce would be ALL IN on that club. His favorite movies are B-movies — Plan Nine From Outer Space, Them, Santa vs. The Martians… Pretty much anything that would make a good MST 3K. And oooh, I have to look up “Forget Paris.” That sounds like a movie I could clap for!

I admit…I saw The Bodyguard (the one with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner) FIVE TIMES in the theater. Which is a lot for a movie that people absolutely hated. I bought it on DVD fairly recently too, and I think I need to watch it again! Love that movie. I also love Love Actually, it’s such a great holiday movie. I count that, When Harry Met Sally, Bridget Jones’ Diary, and Die Hard as Christmas movies. 🙂

Ok, so seriously who hates Love, Actually?? It’s one of my very favorites any time of year, especially at Christmas. Everyone I have ever talked about the movie with adores it!!
My favorite “bad” movie is Ace Ventura, Pet Detective. (The first one) I absolutely love that movie, it makes me crack up, and I know it by heart. But everyone I know makes so much fun of me for it. Another one would be Clue, the one from the 80’s. So campy and hilarious.
I used to be a big Indie film watcher, I would rent every weird movie available. So I saw a lot of crappy movies with big name actors…4 Rooms, 200 cigarettes, Smile, to name a few. Stuff that was so bad but I loved the actors so found stuff about the movies to like.
Also…everything director Kevin Smith ever made. He is not everyone’s cup of tea but I have long been obsessed with his movies, (Chasing Amy slayed me and made me a fan for life) but some of his stuff is…off the beaten path. And some of it isn’t great at all (Jersey Girl, Cop Out)but I see what he was trying to do and have a lot of respect for him for that. And then he brings gems like Zach and Miri and it’s why I will watch everything he does. Even a weird little movie called Yoga Hoosiers.

I really couldn’t think of a single “bad” movie that I love. I do watch the same movies every holiday season just because I like the tradition of it. I would have to say: “Isn’t She Great”. It’s a little-know, hardly ever seen movie about writer Jacqueline Susann’s life from 2000. I only know about it because I was Bette Midler’s photo double in the movie. The release date got pushed back for a year I think which is never a good sign and it got lousy reviews, but I had a lot of fun doing it.

Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion!

So many great lines.

This sounds so fun!

I have a handful of “bad” movies that I love – Cry Baby is the most notable one that I agree is terrible but I loved it as a teen and it’s nostalgic for me.

Mr. Big loves ALL the bad movies – Caddyshack, Police Academy, Super Troopers, etc.

I don’t think I have a “bad” movie that I love. I do dislike Love Actually. my husband loves it but I don’t at all.

The feminist in me knows _Pretty Woman_ is probably a “bad” film, but I love it!!!
