Fourth of July
It’s the fourth of July tomorrow, which is always an interesting time in DC and even a more interesting time during election season. We don’t go downtown anymore for the fireworks because it takes so long to get off the Mall afterward. I feel like fireworks in DC are either for the young or the well-connected who have access to a rooftop deck. Those of us who are not young and don’t do well in big crowds and do not have access to a shmancy rooftop deck are better off sticking to small town activities.
I am excited because an old friend is coming for the fourth next year. So… yeah… 365 days from now, but still.

I’m with you, Mel… I am not much for crowds anymore. Plus, we usually have a pretty good view of some pretty good fireworks displays in our neighbourhood, right from our condo… best enjoyed from the balcony, but also visible just sitting in our living room! We already had ours a few days ago for the Canada Day long weekend (July 1st). Happy 4th!

I want to have something planned so my kids have an idea about American holidays, but…I find it so challenging to figure out what to do for each one, that most times I end up not doing anything. (I’m the worst American ex-pat, especially after I kept telling myself and others that I’d do X and X once I had kids. Uhm, nope. Not yet, mostly.)

We’re in Scotland, so no celebration here. It’s also my second official week working a four day week as after my maternity leave I’ve been doing three day weeks. By the time I’ve done three consecutive days now, I can’t help but start dreaming of time at home with my boy and becoming more aware of the time with him that I’m missing out on.
But my weekend begins at 5:30pm tomorrow, so I’ll definitely be celebrating tomorrow evening! Three whole days with my boy.
Happy 4th, Mel and family! It’s the 4th in NZ already, so you can start celebrating now. I have been reading a lot of the news about the 4th this year – probably a good year to stay away. A friend wrote a lovely Fbk piece about the 4th, giving me a really good perspective of how Americans see it and feel about it.
It does seem though to be a lot less introspective than our national day – therefore more celebratory. I wish we had both.
Happy (belated) Fourth of July! Oh man, DC must have been nuts what with the tanks and planes and ginormous fireworks display. I’m with you — I don’t like the scads of people at public fireworks shows. We were fortunate to be invited back to our old neighborhood for our neighbors’ street-and-backyard fireworks display — it’s even mortars and crazy boxes with many layers of pyrotechnics, and you get ash and cardboard rained down on you, and there’s a thrill of possible danger, and then there is NO TRAFFIC when you leave. It’s amazing. (Although it was weird to see our house again, and have it be not-our-house.)
