Seize Your Free Time. What Free Time?
Lifehacker lays out a scenario where someone cancels plans, and then asks: “What are you going to do with this unexpected freedom?” Seriously? Are there really people who stand like a deer in headlights, not knowing what they would do if their plans get cancelled? Doesn’t everyone know the only acceptable option is to binge Netflix?
No?
After I stopped rolling my eyes and they returned to their normal position in their sockets, I started thinking about what I would do if I found myself with a free evening and wanted to be productive. I have a long “do this at some point” list: work on the family tree (I want to recopy it because I’ve written all over it, and it’s a little messy), work on a photo project that I’m doing of the kids, or work on the Scotland photo album. (Yes, we’re talking about the trip from 11 months ago… no… it isn’t finished.)
I do work on those things, but it’s hard to carve out time for them when there are so. many. shows. on. Netflix.
What would you do with found time?

Well…I still have all the scrapbook stuff (not assembled) for the trip my husband and I took to Europe over seven years ago. Hey, it took me around 6 years to finish a scrapbook from a trip I took in college, it’ll get done…maybe ;).
In all seriousness though, right now I’d work on finishing our landscaping project. It’s nothing too exciting, just putting in some beds and mulch around the patio along with raking/weeding/prettying the rock ring around the fire pit, but it will look much nicer and make me happy when it’s done.
RIGHT! I often love canceled plans because the possibilities of what can be done are endless but what I end up doing is watching TV. I decided to try something new, only watch tv one weeknight a week and be genuinely productive. I’ll have time to binge watch later.
I usually use found time to read. 😉
Maybe I should consider being productive instead. . . NAH
I would do nothing, so as to recover from all the scheduled time that takes over my brain! I have a ton of projects to do – it took me a month to redo the dining room chair cushions, because each chair took an hour or more. I got bored and moved on to something else. I have a bunch of other stuff to do, but I just don’t feel like it because it’s work and I do enough of that at work. So free time…is free from any activity requirements!
I usually just end up reading or playing games on the phone/computer, though. 🙂
Productivity at home is overrated.
+1 Sharon
I secretly love when plane get cancelled and I can stay home and read… Or watch shows on Netflix or Amazon prime… I can’t wait for summer so I can have equal time doing those things AND gardening.
I would have no trouble filling the time. Probably with either a screen (don’t have Netflix, but do have access to other shows) or a book. Love these kinds of windfalls! (as long as no one has to get hurt to get them).
I would probably consider doing something productive but end up watching netflix 🙂 Maybe I’d try out a new recipe though
