#Microblog Monday 226: Merry Christmas

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

The Internet is a wonderful space because it allows me every year to vicariously experience Christmas.  So feed my heart: how do you do Christmas?  What did you do last night?  What will you do later today?  Have you opened your gifts?  What did you get?  Who are you with?  What is the best thing about this Christmas, or, if it hasn’t been a great day, what is the worst thing about this Christmas?  This doesn’t just need to be a place to gush; you can also use it as a space to vent.

Christmas 2018 — spill it.  Let me know how you’re spending the day if you celebrate it.

Are you also doing #MicroblogMondays? Add your link below. The list will be open until Tuesday morning. Link to the post itself, not your blog URL. (Don’t know what that means? Please read the three rules on this post to understand the difference between a permalink to a post and a blog’s main URL.) Only personal blogs can be added to the list. I will remove any posts that are connected to businesses or are sponsored post.

We have a quiet Christmas. We put the (articifical) tree up a couple of weeks ago when we had a moment after the kids recovered from their cold. It has to be blocked off so the babies don’t pull on the tree. My husband wrapped their gifts last night so they will have the joy of ripping the wrapping paper Christmas morning. We got them each a soft doll. A girl one for Bunny and a boy one for Okra. We are not getting each other presents because we really don’t need much anyways. We are attending my church’s christmas eve service and going to my brother’s house for chili. On Christmas day we will be celebrating at a relative’s house. The best thing about this year’s Christmas is that the babies start to comprehend their surroundings so it makes it fun to tell them about the ornaments and the lights and the presents. Oh and we got them each an ornament for this year: Bunny’s is a girl holding a book that says “I love reading”, and Okra’s is a fire truck, which is his favorite. We will continue the tradition of getting them each an ornament each year.

Headed to the Brown Palace Hotel for high tea to celebrate my niece’s birthday. Then to her parent’s home for a family dinner.

Tomorrow we open presents at my house. Then to my sister’s house for dinner and more unwrapping. I used to love the presents most, but now it’s all about getting to spend time with my family.

I really can’t stand the consumerism of Christmas.

We are all moved and sorting through boxes for Christmas! Bryce is getting to know the new (electric) stove and making us scallops and duck breast, and we are chilling and enjoying Christmas in our new home. We open one present tonight, and the rest get opened one by one tomorrow, punctuated by phone calls and FaceTime with family. Happy holidays to you, may you enjoy the quiet of the season!

It’s all done and dusted in NZ by now. We travelled south to be with my sister and her family this year, and my younger sister did the same, so the best part is all of us being together. We opened gifts on Christmas morning – or mid-day actually – because the ten-year-old couldn’t bare to wait any longer than she already had. Then ate lunch we all helped to prepare, where desserts (pavlova, trifle, fresh berries from my sister’s garden, brandy snaps) are the highlight. A lazy afternoon before walking down the road to my niece’s house where we sat around in her garden with extended family, and ate again (a barbecue and salads) till it got dark.

On Sunday (Christmas eve eve) we visited my BIL and his family about an hour away, instead of staying overnight like we usually do , we let the kids fall asleep in the car at bedtime to make it home for a full day of Christmas eve prep the next day. We wait until the last min so we still had food shopping to do. I also finished making some gifts. We went to a kids Christmas eve service at a local church (not one we usually go to, but the time a location was right!) then a quick dinner, bath and bed so we as parent could do the wirlwind gift/toy prep, wrapping and display! Our kids are 1 and 4, and the 4yo isn’t too inquisitive, so we don’t really have to work hard at the santa magic. He woke up first on Christmas morning and didnt even glance at the huge tent from santa in the living room, he just wanted to watch tv! Oh well. We opened presents, ate cinnamon rolls, and watched kids Christmas movies until 11am when the adults strained the house and started food prep for the extended family dinner at our house. We had 6 extra people in addition to us, that’s our typical crowd for holidays and birthdays. Everyone helped by bringing food. More presents, a walk, lots of eating, and playing with toys. I also laughed until I cried with my family, so that memory is being filed away for a sad and rainy day. I love toys, so it was fun to pick out stuff for our kids and play with it myself! I made the 4yo a wand that turned out pretty cool. It was a great Christmas. Now it’s quiet and my heart is full.
