#Microblog Monday 218: Costume Fatigue

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

My brilliant costume idea fell through.  Last November, I decided the whole family would get animal onesies from Target this year.  Josh swung by the Target a few weeks ago and reported they were all out of animal onesies.  Yes, I’m aware that there are other places we could try to make our onesie dreams come true, but we all gave up when they weren’t at the first store.

I went on Facebook to gather Halloween costume ideas (thank you, everyone!), and an old friend reminisced about how I used to make my guinea pig amazing costumes and take him around the neighbourhood trick-or-treating.  He went as Batpig one year, though he kept trying to twist around and eat the cape.  He went as a 15th century minstrel, complete with a tiny felt lute strapped across his powder blue tunic.

Just a few years ago, I was making ornate costumes for the kids.  I took over the dining room table to make a Lady Vastra mask!  I made a sonic screwdriver out of toilet parts!  I cannot tell you how many Queen Esther costumes I made over the years.  But somewhere along the way, I got really really really tired of costume making.

What will you be for Halloween this year?  Or what costumes did you make?

Are you also doing #MicroblogMondays? Add your link below. The list will be open until Tuesday morning. Link to the post itself, not your blog URL. (Don’t know what that means? Please read the three rules on this post to understand the difference between a permalink to a post and a blog’s main URL.) Only personal blogs can be added to the list. I will remove any posts that are connected to businesses or are sponsored post.

I made “monster” costumes (that was what older daughter requested) out of sweatshirts that came with spikes on the hood, then I added felt pieces I glued on. It makes her happy, so I’m happy, though not the most creative/amazing/cool/pinterest-worthy thing ever.

I have a dress/chemise/apron/cap that someone made me in college. It’s handy – can be used for history festivals and Halloween!

Also, I really would love to see photos of the guinea pig costumes. Those sound cool!

We just told DC2 no about a last minute switch from Elsa to hermione. (We have the Elsa costume.)

Um, ok, Mel. You cannot post a description of taking your guinea pig out trick or treating in costume without POSTING A PHOTO OF YOUR GUINEA PIG IN COSTUME. That is all. Carry on.

This is the first year I haven’t assembled any part of my girls’ costumes. They are Violet and Dash from the Incredibles and we stumbled across the costumes in August for such a bargain I snapped them up. My husband and I have Incredibles t-shirts because at age 41, in freezing temps (and a possible wintry mix of precipitation!) I never even considered being Elastigirl. 😉 She’s awesome but I’m not really a spandex onesie girl.

Another vote for guinea pig in costume photos!!

My post this week is all about missing out on Halloween. But I will admit, worrying about costumes is definitely NOT something I miss or feel like I’ve missed out on with my kids!! I can’t remember the last time I dressed up for Halloween — possibly for a Halloween party we went to with dh’s cousins when we were first married, 30+ years ago. (We went as cowboys, wore plaid shirts, fake mustaches, bandanas and the cowboy hats we bought on our honeymoon at the Calgary Stampede.) I do have a Halloween fascinator in my box of seasonal decorations which I used to wear on Halloween, handing out candy at the front door to all the trick or treaters. It was a black velvet headband with a glittery skull & crossbones & black tulle on it. 🙂

Please, please, please, PLEASE dress up Linus. Please take him out with you. And please get photos.

I’m lazy with Halloween costumes. I know I could be a lot more creative, but it requires having someone in on the action, spurring me on. Currently, don’t have that, so costumes purchased from Amazon and kids (and Grey) ready to go minus one pair of shoes. One witches hat for your’s truly to maintain the theme the neighborhood kids seem to think I embody.

I’m not dressing up for Halloween this year. I’ve never been a big fan of Halloween and have only dressed up a handful of times as an adult, mostly for parties that required costumes.

The idea of my making a costume makes me literally laugh out loud. I buy my sons the costumes they want, and trust me, they look much better in those than they would look in anything I would try and cobble together. (I am neither craft-y nor creative.)

Yes! Pictures of Linus in costume! Please!

I do group Halloween costumes at school, and since I have worked on two teams in the past it’s been challenging. I was Where’s Waldo in the morning and then a Munchkin in the afternoon (just added rainbow suspenders, a golf hat, and a giant lollipop and walked around on my knees), I was a yellow M&M in the morning and a Star Bellied Snitch in the afternoon (replace the felt M with a blue felt star and put my hair in a stick up ponytail). Last year I was Dopey, and just went with that. This year I am a purple Troll from the movie, but it’s not super crafty because we’re wearing jeans, the color t shirt, a troll wig, and whatever makeup we want. What I really want is to be a zombie. The zombie idea never wins, so I turn into one at home.

I can actually sew but I just don’t have the time… And since Costco has quality costumes in the $20 range that’s what we’ve been doing. This year one of my kids was (yes, was, our Halloween was this weekend with school carnival and other local events) a witch and for the other we purchased a Mia costume on Amazon from the Mia and me show.

Trend I saw this year that seems even lazier: those blowup costumes (rented?) that have batteries and an air pump like bouncy houses.

I haven’t dressed up for Halloween in years!!! I think it would be fun to do family costumes, but I doubt my husband would ever go for it. I maaaaaybe could talk him into a t-shirt. The thought of making my kids’ Halloween costumes just sounds completely overwhelming! They originally were going to be Spiderman and Wonder Woman, but they changed their minds when we went to a trunk or treat yesterday. Ayden insisted on wearing his Dino-Trux costume from last year, and Rylee wore a dragon costume that’s been around for years in my mil’s dress up drawer for the grandkids. Who knows what they will decide to be Wednesday!

I got burnt out somewhere along the way, too. This year I just wore a New Orleans-style feather mask. Nothing special for clothes. And the mask came off within 10 minutes of entering the party. Lame-0.

I get inspired when I see other people’s clever costumes, but I don’t seem to have what it takes to be one of those people.
