#Microblog Monday 216: Best Books

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I don’t like the idea of reading challenges because I never want to rush through books I love, but I am very excited that I’ve consumed 27 books this year. Plus, it’s only October. I could definitely hit 30 before the year is out. Considering I only read 17 books in 2017, I am pretty damn proud of myself.

And only two or three of them have been duds that I kept reading because I was too far in to stop. I quit one because the typos made the story confusing.

Favourites have been Little Disasters (Randall Klein — my brother, but I can still put his book on my list), The Last Policeman trilogy (Ben Winters), Us (David Nicholls), and Crazy Rich Asians (Kevin Kwan).

What are your favourite things you’ve read so far in 2018?

Are you also doing #MicroblogMondays? Add your link below. The list will be open until Tuesday morning. Link to the post itself, not your blog URL. (Don’t know what that means? Please read the three rules on this post to understand the difference between a permalink to a post and a blog’s main URL.) Only personal blogs can be added to the list. I will remove any posts that are connected to businesses or are sponsored post.

So this is pretty sad but I think I have only read one book this year, three at most, for myself. I would have to locate my Kindle to even know what they were, but it was definitely a fluff read and not anything life changing or all that amazing, that much I know.

Now, I have read approximately 26,374 Dr. Seuss and Sandra Boynton and Mo Williams and a zillion other kids books. So my brain has been being used, just not for me. Oh, and it’s a definite brain workout getting through many of Dr. Seuss’ creations!

I don’t have time to read books much. And honestly, as much as I like to read, I’m probably the only writer who would rather fill my spare time away from work and family with exercise, meditation and a few TV shows. I do love to re-read old murder mysteries which I do in about 20 minute increments a day or 2 a week so it takes me months to read a book.

I have read 16 books this year which is just above average for me. I am hoping to get to 25, but we will see. The best book by far has been Out of the Whirlwind by Mark A. Tabb and The Host by Stephanie Meyers. Please, no judgment on the last one! I could feel that the movie was rushed so I looked at the book’s reviews and decided to try it. It is not YA it was written for adults and it was really good. I read 638 pages in 3 days which is something I haven’t done since I was a teen!

I didn’t enjoy Twilight but really liked The Host, too. I didn’t know it was a movie too.

Hmmm, favorites. I have to confess, I don’t read as much fiction these days and I tend to read it more slowly. I do read a lot of nonfiction, though. At the moment I’m reading “Burial Rites” about the last female to be executed in Iceland for murder and so far I’m enjoying it. I also read “Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder” which was really interesting and a more realistic look at the legend. I also did read “Little Disasters”, which I enjoyed as well!

This is the second year that I have done a reading challenge on Goodreads. My goal for this year is/was 45 books, and I have already read 38! My favorites so far for the year:

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (now a movie)
This Must Be the Place by Maggie O’Farrell
Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua (yeah, I’m pretty late to the party on this one)

I have noticed that I have read a lot more female authors this year than I usually do, which is interesting. Part of this is no doubt due to my book club — we take turns picking the book each month, and most of us choose female authors — but not all of it.

Late to this book, but A Man Called Ove was beautiful and I loved it so much. Little Fires Everywhere, The Hate U Give and Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine were also excellent reads.

Ah! I forgot about Little Fires Everywhere! So good.

I read Little Fires Everywhere. So well written and engaging but I didn’t appreciate its message about biological ties in parent/child relationships.

The adoption and gestational carrier pieces were frustrating for sure… I felt like there were pieces that played into Lifetime Movie like fears that I didn’t appreciate.

I’ve been doing the Goodreads Challenge for the past few years, with a goal of 24 books a year (two per month). I used to read a LOT more but I figured that was a realistic goal that might push me to read more. I read 24 in 2016 but only 17 last year, and I’m on track this year with 20 books so far (all of which have been reviewed — or will be 😉 — on my blog). Most of them have been pretty good, but I think my favourites would include “Prairie Fires” which KatherineA mentioned above, “Educated” by Tara Westover and “No One Tells You This” by Glynnis MacNicol.

I stopped doing reading challenges last summer when I felt it sucked the enjoyment out of my summer reading and I found myself choosing books based on whether or not I thought I could finish them somewhat quickly, which isn’t a good reason.

But, I am a super prolific reader and don’t really want to tell you how many books I’ve read so far (more than 50, less than 100) this year. To be fair, I read a lot of Young Adult novels for school.

I also loved The Hate U Give, and Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman, Watch Me Disappear by Janelle Brown, Hag-Seed by Margaret Atwood, The Three Dark Crowns series by Kendare Blake, One of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus, I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron, and Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi.

There’s more but those are favorites for sure!

I don’t know how many books I read… I think I average something like 5 a week, mostly romances. Cat Sebastian was a big find for me this year. I finished most of KJ Charles’ oerve this year as well, though I first encountered her work a couple years ago. Right now I’m cranking through Amanda quick’s body of work.

What an amazing list! My goal once things settle is to be able to pick up books again. This gives me some great recommendations

Little Disasters and Us, for sure. Little Fires Everywhere, too.

I need to read more.

This year has been my worst reading year ever, I think. Most of the books I’ve read have been audiobooks! I’m getting back into it, but it’s been a difficult year to read. I’m going to bookmark this post though, for the recommendations.

I sneaked in to Microblog Mondays under false pretenses I think – it’s Wednesday here!!

That is impressive!!

I just saw the Crazy Rich Asians movie, and it made me want to read the book.
