Librarians Get to Do Everything Cool

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I want to be a librarian when I grow up.  (1) I want to work the scanner.  I volunteered at a library and got to do that, and it was AMAZING.  (2) I want to choose the books.  (3) I want to talk to people about books.  (4) And now, I want to be a library detective.

It started with a thread where people were listing books they sort of remembered but couldn’t name (and clearly wanted to find again) or books they had heard about but hadn’t read yet, and these librarians tracked down the books based on whatever details you could give them.  The thread is still going, and it’s now in the thousands.

This sounds like my ideal job.  It’s like solving a murderless, crimeless mystery; the best sort of mystery for someone squeamish like me.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

OOh, yes! That sounds SO COOL. Also, I think this is the best click-baity post title ever (for the dorky book-lover crowd, that is), I was so excited to see what you had to say!

What do I want to be when I grow up? Independently wealthy. 😉

We were doing the book detective thing at the library several weeks ago – my daughter said “I’m looking for this book that has a purple cover with kids and a monster on it. It’s about saving a baby from the monsters, but the baby is also a monster. It’s on these shelves over here, somewhere.” We searched and searched – plot lines and cover designs on Amazon, in the library catalog, on the web – but couldn’t find anything. The kid finally found it by searching all the shelves, which is good, because the rest of us had no clue.

Sounds like a fun job, but I’d most likely suck at it. Haha! I just spent the last 10 months trying to figure out a song I heard (around xmas time). The only things I could remember were that it was a boy band (or at least it was boys/guys, no girls), emo, black-white-theme music video in a grave/churchyard and the the words “silent night”, but they weren’t said sweetly like in the xmas song, these were a bit angsty/punk/emo. Answer below.

Billy Talent – Devil in a Midnight Mass.
And the video I was thinking of was from a different band. * big grin* I think Chemical Romance.

I did think about becoming a librarian when I was growing up, but journalist won out. Beyond my love of books, I think I was influenced by Mrs. M, our school librarian. She was very pretty, very nice, wore mini-skirts and was married to one of the good-looking male teachers. 😉

One of my high-school classmates worked part-time at the library after school. I was SO JEALOUS.

I’m still deciding what I’d like to be. But being retired is pretty close to perfect, I think. 😉
