Waiting for Reason
I’m waiting for the voice of reason. The person who will step over party lines and take a stand and say,
“Wait a second. We treat women horribly in this country, and this has to end. We cannot consider a person for the highest court in the land who has been accused by multiple people of aiding or committing sexual assault. We cannot have someone passing judgments that affect all people if that person is not fair, considerate, and thoughtful. We don’t want someone on the bench who is not our best and brightest. We cannot rush a judge on the bench — whose whole job is to listen carefully to facts — who does not want us to carefully consider the facts and take our time to thoughtfully come to a decision.”
But that voice won’t come because we treat women horribly in this country.
Because there are people who elect people even knowing that they’ve aided or committed sexual crimes.
So I’m waiting for this adult to show up among the elected officials and lead the way. And I don’t think that person is coming. So the only thing I can do in November is bring in new adults.

This is so disheartening. There was nothing in the circus yesterday that didn’t show that man as unqualified for the position for which he was nominated. He’s partisan, he drinks a lot, he’s emotional, he’s unrepentant about whatever youthful mistakes he might have made. That’s not what a judge should be.
I’ll vote in November, but I’m starting to lose hope that rational people will ever again be included in our government.

Thank you. When I find snippets of text that speak to my views of what’s going on now, I grab them, adapt them, and resistbot them to my Senators. They just heard from me again, using what you wrote above as my starting point. I know we need to act in November (I will vote early, in October), but there are things we can do now. I am writing, and while it may not change the vote (it certainly will not change my red-state Senators’ votes) I am hoping it starts to shift the mood and increase awarenesses. I have just ordered another 100 postcards to write for Postcards to Voters. And I am looking into GOTV activities in my area. November matters, but we must not wait (I know you were not advocating waiting but just wanted to add my voice and emphasize this.).

I think it’s important to call and fax today so that they know that we do not think it is ok. Because the less pushback they get, the more they will try. Folks can fax for free using faxzero.

Wait… but didn’t you support the nomination of Hillary Clinton? She turned a blind eye to her husband’s sexual crimes, helped cover them up, and then treated horribly the women who accused him.
The only thing worse than a man treating women badly… is a woman treating women badly.
To me, it is a double standard and hypocritical to not want a man on the Supreme Court who “may” have committed a sexual crime (he has merely been accused, not convicted), but then desperately want a woman who was complicit in her husband’s sexual crimes to be the president of our country.
Yes. I keep having hope that this elusive person will show up and save the day but… I don’t think it’s going to happen. It’s a heavy feeling.

The times they are a-changin’. What has always (throughout all recorded human history) been OK or at least overlooked is now being seen for its inherent egregiousness. This comeuppance has men who abused their power because they could quaking in their boots — as it should. As painful as recent months have been, it’s a fascinating time to be around to witness this major major shift in balancing power. It may seem like change is coming way too slowly, but if you zoom out 5000 years, it has been a remarkable 100 years, an incredible 100 months, an historic 100 weeks.
Ugh… I agree with you, and the fear that rational people will be excluded from government. I got so mad with the claim that this hearing was Democrat power-grabbing shenanigans, when, um, MERRICK GARLAND. And human decency. I love that a local business has #webelieveher on their Marquee, but it seems that those who make the decisions have terrible judgment. I can only hope that November brings change.
