Frozen Drinks

Our bodies are slowly becoming gelatinous masses from watching way too many Olympic events (isn’t this a strange fact of the Olympics–we watch people in states of incredible physical fitness and by the very fact that we’re not moving as we watch them, we are moving farther away from physical fitness).  On the schedule today: speedskating and women’s luge.

What we’re really waiting for is skeleton, which seems to be luge done on your stomach instead of your back.  I’m not sure why we’re more excited to see people hurtling themselves down an icy track on their fronts rather than their backs, but we are.

What is your favourite event at the Olympics?  And while I pour virtual drinks, also catch us up on what has happened to you since last month’s Lushary.

As always, it has been about a month since we met, bitched, cried, comforted, and caught up each other on our cycles and lives. Pull up a seat and I’ll pour you a drink. Let everyone know what is happening in your life. The good, the bad, the ugly. My only request is that if a story catches your eye, you follow it back to the person’s blog and start reading their posts. Give some love, give some support, or laugh with someone until your drink comes out of your nose.

I have a ton of assvice in my back pocket and as a virtual bartender, I will give it to you unless you specifically tell me that this is simply a vent and you do not want to receive anything more than a hug.

So if you have been a lurker for a while (or if this is your first open bar), sit down and tell us about yourself. Remember to provide a link or a way for people to continue reading your story (or if you don’t have a blog–gasp!–you can always leave an email address if you’re looking for advice or support. If not, people can leave messages for that person here in the comments section too). If you’re a regular at the bar, I’ll get out your engraved martini glass while you make yourself comfortable. And anyone new, welcome. I’m glad you found this virtual bar.

For those who have no clue what I’m talking about when I say that the bar is open, click here to catch up and then jump into the conversation back on this current post.

So have an imaginary cocktail and tell us what is up with your life.

I’m giddy to watch the MEN’s figure skating. GIDDY. For oh so many reasons…the costumes, the athleticism…the costumes!
And, as a self proclaimed Olympic addict, I will happily sit up all the live long night (as IF I don’t already) and watch things like…cross country skiing. And cry about it.

CHEERS! (it’s a bit early for cocktail hour here, but I’ll have one later, when I watch those Men skate!)

I need a stiff drink asap. Whatever you have handy. Just found out this week my son needs leg braces, has serious speech issues, and more. My daughter went to the doctor today and has bronchitis. What a crap week, and it’s only Tuesday.

The past month has been full of figuring out what on Earth our son’s biological mother damaged with her drug usage while she was pregnant. Something we were never told about prior to adopting our son at 5 weeks. My head is a mess. I need to put up a coherent post soon.

Another round please.

In addition to moving farther away from physical fitness and neglecting my to-do list by watching 3+ hours of coverage a night I’m also cutting into my beauty sleep. But I HAD to stay up to watch Zhen and Zhao last night! Looking forward to the women’s downhill (and the rest of figure skating). I’ll go for a nice strong Irish coffee. Basically I have nothing going on this month besides being cranky at the crappy ski season we’re having, cranky that DH has decided to take on a remodel project himself instead of hiring it out and getting it over with (my style), and cranky that we’re still waiting while I keep getting announcements and baby shower invites.

Still the same place I was last month….although in that time we turned down a match for medical reasons but the bat phone has been silent ever since. On top of that, my co-worker who has always hated children, popped one of her very own out last week. Good times.

5 Baby Smiling In Back Seat { 02.16.10 at 4:48 pm }

Figure skating, but I don’t have the time or mental energy to get into watching this time around.

Trying to do it all, and doing a 20% better job than I was last month. 20% more than what felt like complete failure = constant stomachache but with daily bouts of joy and satisfaction.

I’d like a ginger mojito-fresh and tasty, but strong. Although I am entirely smitten with my divine new baby, I learned today that I likely won’t be getting the fabulous new job that I’ve been working toward for the last year. I need the mental nourishment of a job, and I need to love what I do, and this job was the only thing I’ve wanted to do next professionally, so I am just devestated.

And I feel like a jerk for complaining, because I’ve got this wonderful new baby and still have my old job to return to at the end of my leave. But still-it’s kind of the end of a dream, and that just sucks.

I love watching skiing and skating. I have several cousins that are volunteering at the Olympics and it’s been neat to follow it through them. I guess, it’s made me more excited about the games due to the connection. Fun times.

For me, it’s been a tough couple of weeks. My first IVF cycle was cancelled due to over-surpression – damn lupron – and I’m waiting to start my second cycle. It was tough for my husband and I. Going through of all of this IF stuff also made me realize that I really hated my job and needed something completely diff. So, I’ve also gotten another job, quit my old one and will be starting the new one on March 8. Let’s just do everything at once, shall we? ha!

Pass me a couple of shots of jagermeister, I’ll skip the mixed drink! Find me and my crazy story at http://www.sassyiflady.blogspot.com.

8 Beautiful Mess { 02.16.10 at 4:54 pm }

I’ll take a few STRONG dirty martinis..all lined up please.

With hand surgery and subsequent doctor’s appointments, I am fried. I’m sick of going to the doctor and listening to him telling me I should have full range of movement by now. I’d much rather solve this problem then being chastised like a child. I am doing my exercises! I am doing the best I can, dammit! Can someone just give me SOME sort of positive reinforcement, please?!
Thanks for the place to vent!
*HUGS*

9 queenie { 02.16.10 at 4:54 pm }

Oh, and I am usually into skating, but this year it’s the skiing and snowboarding that’s captured my attention.

10 Kim { 02.16.10 at 4:58 pm }

Can I have a nice glass of muscat, please? Leave the bottle.

I am not a huge fan of alcohol but the combination of IVF#1 and being told I can’t have any, makes me WANT.

If I had to pick a favorite event, it’s either aerial skiing or men’s hockey so that I can watch Sergei play for Mother Russia. But really, you’d never guess those were the faves. I watch it all with the commitment of a lifelong fan.

11 Mina { 02.16.10 at 5:21 pm }

Hello, everybody!
For once in a rather long time, I am happy. So, Mel, this round is on me! The list of happy bullets:
– I am 15 w pregnant, and the baby is just fine, despite the last week’s spotting, which is gone.
– Although I have started enjoying food again, I did not gain too much wait, all in all about a pound I think in 3 weeks (and trust me, this is the first time in a loooooong time that I am able to say this).
– My belly popped out finally and it no longer looks like bad bloating.
– I ordered my first ever pregnancy stuff, some clothes, online. I still fit in half of mine, so I do not really need it, but by the time they are delivered, they might come in handy.

Ok, hubs is not all that fine, he has some health issues which need addressing, and they are, and they can be improved, so I am trying to focus on the positive – he is no longer in pain, and I chose this to make me happy.

So, all in all – world, I am happy.

I hope this newly found happiness rubs on you too, fellow virtual drinkers. It would be wise to stop here, wouldn’t it, repeating one word such as ‘happy’ can be rather annoying. To be sure of your forgiveness, the next round is on me as well! Shameless briber IS my middle name. 😉 Cheers!

12 susy { 02.16.10 at 5:26 pm }

I don’t have a fave in the Olympics, as far as events, but my heart is just full of patriotic team spirit. It all is so amazing to me, b/c I’m soooo far from being that physical.

But I usually take a Margarita, but that seems more like a party drink, and I’m in no mood for a party today. So how about a Caipirinha?? Just b/c they’re stronger and are just as yum! I wasn’t able to go to my Grandmother’s 80th Birthday Bash due to family drama and dynamics. While “everyone” was there, I was absent and crying over how dumb things can be. Even after almost 10 years. I did give her a birthday hug and kiss and was able to have breakfast w/ her, but not being in her presence for her ‘big bash’ is still hearbreaking and the emotions are just so raw.

So another Caipirinha, pls.

13 Blanche { 02.16.10 at 6:36 pm }

Like Mina, I am happy. We saw our little Christmas miracle trying to do the backstroke this morning, and while morning sickness is still around it’s getting more predictable and thus avoidable when I remember to watch for the triggers.

As for favorite Olympic events – I’ll admit my huge bias – any event in which Americans are likely to medal. Even the events I don’t understand like Nordic Combined I’ll happily watch if an American is likely to either medal or try to.

So since this is virtual, please pour me an Apricot Brandy and keep everyone else’s drinks coming.

14 loribeth { 02.16.10 at 7:14 pm }

I’ll have a Baileys on ice, please. Not much has happened to me over the past month. Even though it’s just been a few short days, my life seems completely focused on the Olympics. (Where have I been? Where am I going? I have no idea. My only concern is, what’s on next on the Olympics? lol)

My favourite Olympic sport is figure skating, hands down. Has been ever since I was a kid. Which is why I was up until 12:30 last night, even though I had to get up at 5 a.m. to get to work this morning. :p And will probably be doing the same tonight. My plan is to head to bed early on non-skating nights, but I suppose that will depend on what other sports are on & whether Canada has any medal contenders in it.

Also love the downhill skiing. And speed skating. I am not a huge hockey fan but I’m sure I will watch the finals, assuming Canada is in them. And dh & I just discovered snowboard cross these past two days — got home just in time tonight to see our girl win the gold! Hurray!! : )

Dh said he wants to try snowboarding now. Not sure that is particularly wise at our ages, but we’ll see…!

Off now to watch some more…

15 Sonja { 02.16.10 at 7:37 pm }

Since the last get together, I have discovered the awesomeness which is a gin and tonic. I’ll have one please 🙂

Aside from sinus problems, things are going good. Tho an online friend of mine just got her hysterectomy date, and it’s brought up memories and stuff so that got me kind of down, but it got my kitchen clean lol!

Things with the new boyfriend and I are great, he’s pretty awesome.

I’ve never gotten into the Olympics. But…baseball’s spring training is about to start!!

16 Vee { 02.16.10 at 7:54 pm }

I don’t have a fave at the winter Olympics I just wish there were more Aussie participants that we could cheer on.

Oh I may have to have a cocktail to get me into the summer holiday we are about to have and to recover from the fact that my husbands father is a real ass. Although we knew that but it was confirmed in an email max received. He really doesn’t care that his son is losing his battle with cancer and doesn’t care whether he is will ever see him again. Which makes me angry and so very sad.

17 Kristin { 02.16.10 at 8:06 pm }

I love figure skating and downhill skiing.

I need a big old Amaretto Margarita because I had a trip to the post office with Gabe that had everyone there thinking I needed Nanny 911 to come visit.

18 Hillary { 02.16.10 at 8:08 pm }

I’ll take a mojito, please! Only a few more days left to drink alcohol since I am starting my first IVF cycle soon. Whoo-hoo!

I love figure skating (who doesn’t? :)). I got really into speed skating over the weekend, too!

19 Meghan { 02.16.10 at 9:08 pm }

I’ll take a nice string drink. Nothing frozen since I’m done with being snowed in. Maybe a nice spiked hot chocolate?? Heavy on the spiked. We’ve got alot of water damage from these storms. Our insurance might not cover it all, in which case starting treatments for #2 is out of the question. In a sick wait and see with my stomach in a knot until the adjuster comes out on thurs

20 VA Blondie { 02.16.10 at 9:21 pm }

I would love a glass of red wine. Between the snow and the new baby in our house, I have not left our house much at all. I probably need to get out more, if nothing else to save my sanity. I feel like I am all baby all the time. I am a little jealous about my hubby going to work and getting to see people from the outside world. Sad but true.

I keep meaning to do a post about a lot of different things, but typing a post one handed does not appeal. I really ought to write stuff down so that I remember what I wanted to talk about when I do get a chance to post!

21 Ann Z { 02.16.10 at 11:15 pm }

Thanks for opening the bar. I really, really want a beer.

I got a positive pregnancy test and good beta a week and a half ago, for which I’m thrilled and extremely grateful. I haven’t announced on my blog yet because my parents and my in-laws all read (gah!) and we haven’t told them yet, either. We’re trying to get our house ready to sell and I had no idea just how much work it is to do the major decluttering, fixing up, cleaning, painting. I wish I had the time and space to really enjoy the early pregnancy, but who am I kidding? If I had the time and space, I’d just be obsessing with worry. Still, I’d love a beer.

I think the biathlon is a pretty amazing sport. Not that I’m a big fan of shooting guns, but to be able to ski quickly, and then stop and still yourself enough to hit a target is kind of cool. I also love figure skating and speed skating.

22 Mrs. Gamgee { 02.17.10 at 12:13 am }

Ahhhh a drink… wouldn’t that be nice? I’m in the mood for a ceasar (a bloody mary made with clamato juice rather than just tomato for the uninitiated) with a nice spicy pepperoncini in it. Work has been a bear lately, I’m in the tww, and we are dog-sitting a pup that has turned into a bit of a holy terror.

The winter games… I love them all. Or at least most of them. I don’t really understand the biathalon. What’s the thrill? Favourites tho? Hockey, figure skating, curling, and most recently, the whole snowboarding thing has become pretty interesting.

23 Barely Sane { 02.17.10 at 12:23 am }

I caught DH watching figure skating tonight…. and I wasn’t even here to force him! It was on when I came home!

I love it all, but as a true Canadian, my fave is the hockey. Can I have a beer now?

24 S.I.F. { 02.17.10 at 3:29 am }

I read a story about a woman who got pregnant when she didn’t even have a vagina. I’ve been irritated about it for weeks, and I finally wrote about it a few days ago, because… seriously? I have a rocking vagina, and I don’t stand a chance without IVF. She had no vagina and got pregnant without even trying (it was a crazy set of circumstances involving a knife fight whereby the knife had sperm on it… crazy). The whole “it’s not fair” of it all for sure has me needing a drink!

25 Tio { 02.17.10 at 3:36 am }

Mojito please! Oh so refreshing….
I’ve started a new job which is scary but so far is going really well.
I’m in the 2WW and so worried about how I might handle the disappointment of a BFN on Saturday. Gulp.
Cheers!

26 Hope Springs { 02.17.10 at 6:45 am }

I love everything about the Olympics – winter and summer.

While I’m watching, a nice little (bottle of) Amaretto would be great. Followed by a (bottle of) Amaruhla – and then we’ll see about moving on down the alphabet.

In real life, DH and I have given up alcohol, processed sugar, chocolate, caffeine and anything else that’s remotely fun and are popping ridiculous amounts of supplements in a bid to get ourselves healthy for ICSI #3, while we wait to hear from our new clinic with an initial appointment date. But surely virtual alcohol won’t hurt…

27 Manapan { 02.17.10 at 7:03 am }

I’ll have a bubble bath, please (Tequila Rose, tequila, & 7Up).

I’ve never been into watching sports, but I do kind of have a thing for figure skating. I think it’s just the shiny costumes. 🙂

This month, I finally got up the ovaries to tell my husband I no longer had the emotional wherewithal to continue taking bcp. They always had bad emotional side effects for me, and they were making crawling out of the depression I’ve sunk into very difficult. He surprised me by telling me he wanted to ttc instead of finding an alternate method of birth control. So all my time has been spent drinking green tea, popping supplements, and checking cm while pretending that Everything is going to go Just Fine this time, and there is Nothing to Worry About. The third time IS a charm, after all. Right?

28 Kir { 02.17.10 at 8:25 am }

well, since I can’t drink in real life, I’ll take an apple martini …

things are ok, Boys are really talking and generally just amazing me with how they have grown and learned overnight (it seems) they have memorized books, know most of thier colors, animals and songs etc. It’s so much fun to see.

I turned 40…and enjoyed it. I’ll be celebrating for about a year now. LOL

my whole family was sick for about 2 weeks, stomach flus, sinus infections etc. But we are all on the mend now.

I am sad for two very special friends that got some bad IF news this week, I am out of words for how heartbroken I am for these women. Trying to find what I can do for them…

and my Weight Watchers quest is not going well..might be all the birthday cake I’ve been eating (LOL), I haven’t lost any weight, BUT I haven’t gained a pound yet either. So my new goal is to lose at least 5 pounds.

other than that, status quo. Thinking of all of you …and wishing you what you WISH FOR.

29 Kir { 02.17.10 at 8:27 am }

oh If forgot to talk about the Olympics, Um, I don’t really like them. But if I had to pick a sport, the figure skating is my favorite. I don’t watch it. Only the highlights. 🙁

I have, however, been enjoying the Westminster Dog Show. I am not a huge animal fan and not a huge dog fan either, but something about those little tails wagging and them “smiling” at the camera as they run around that ring, makes me exceptionally happy.

30 Devon { 02.17.10 at 8:35 am }

Im mainly watching the men’s hockey, and figure skating, but I do like to catch a little bit of each event- I even enjoy the curling.

Since it’s only a virtual drink I’ll have a amaretto on the rocks.
I’ve been blessed with a fairly trouble free pregnancy so far, after so many years of trying I guess it’s what the universe decided to give me, But of course the universe also has thrown cancer into the mix. My father was diagnosed with Brain Cancer 2 weeks ago, he has since had surgery, and is starting radiation and chemo. We are doing everything we can at this point to make this our new “normal”. But the prognosis isn’t good, and we’re all just learning how to deal with this. It makes me sad to think that my baby that we tried so hard and long for, most likely wont know my father. All those years I can’t have back. Just another think Infertility took from me. Ugh. So I am struggling with balancing the happiness of a new life, and losing my father, it’s a battle everyday.

Can I have a virtual shot of something really strong as well?? 😉

31 Katie { 02.17.10 at 9:13 am }

Hmmmm, I’ll take a big Bloody Mary, please. 🙂

It’s impossible for me to choose my favorite Olympic event. I love snowboarding, figure skating, and luge. But I’m a sucker for some curling. It’s just so fascinating to me!

32 Lynn { 02.17.10 at 9:33 am }

Oooh! I’m celebrating today, so could I please have a glass of champagne? I got a promotion (complete with ANOTHER raise) at work yesterday! And today I have an appointment with my doctor to hopefully get started on our treatments again, so I’m in excellent spirits at the moment.

My favorite Olympic event would have to be ice dancing and figure skating. I know, I know….but there’s just something about it that gets me. I love to dream I could do that (that’s really funny, because I’m about as coordinated as an elephant on roller skates). Love it! Also enjoy watching the curling. The Hubs enjoys it as well, so those are our biggies.

Going back to see how everyone else has been over the last month now!

33 nh { 02.17.10 at 10:17 am }

A large rum and coke please…

I love figure skating, I love watching the snow boarding and luge. But not enough to stay up through the night to watch it – ‘the best of’ program is as far as I am going at the moment.

We’re moving forward with our adoption plans, we’ve just finished our prep course. We have a meeting next week, to review how that went, and whether the social worker thinks we can continue onwards.

34 Susan { 02.17.10 at 10:29 am }

Give me pairs dancing. But only if they do something sexy and outragous.
Do you ever get over fertility problems? Adopted 30 years ago, spayed 25 years ago and the wounds still feel fresh.

35 Rebecca { 02.17.10 at 12:22 pm }

I’m totally addicted to all things Olympics. I love hearing the news and seeing the winners faces. I feel horrible for the ones who wipe out and lose the chance to compete. I love the underdog stories and the stories of redemption. Generally I’m just really not a sports person, but for the Winter Olympics I just sit on pins and needles hoping beyond hope that they *don’t fall down*!!!

So far this year I’ve loved it all but most loved snowboard cross (which I’ve never watched before), short track speed skating and pairs figure skating.

As for a drink — I’d really like a moscato. I’m freaked about whether my CD11 u/s will show happy follicles tomorrow or not for our next IUI and I just need to relax…

36 Delenn { 02.17.10 at 1:45 pm }

Still burned out here, although things are getting better. However, our romantic evening has been screwed up for tonight as babysitter sick…now we will be celebrating the night we met 20 years ago–with our kids. Partly happy about this, partly not. Stiff drinks and some Plum Wine please.

37 Chickenpig { 02.17.10 at 2:49 pm }

I’ll have what they’re having. 🙂

We found out today that the seller of the house we want signed the contract…BUT she doesn’t really have the authority to sign the contract because she owes the bank…and so on and so on. This attempt at purchasing a home has been worse than my last pregnancy. Yeah you’ve got a positive beta…but it’s not great…woops, it’s not doubling, probably a goner…woops, wait a minute…the numbers more than doubled…possibly ectopic? *sigh* I can’t stand the stress, but I can’t give up. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. So make ’em strong and keep ’em coming.

38 jill { 02.17.10 at 2:54 pm }

I’ll take a strawberry daiquiri! mmmmm

I think figure skating is my favorite but I would watch just about any event and be interested. I haven’t watch much though – I don’t need more excuses to procrastinate.

I’m finding myself in a huge work and general life slump. I need to get things done but instead they pile up while I do other things and pretend the things I should be doing don’t exist. Really trying to bust myself out of this cycle while also trying to spend more *quality* time with my husband. Sometimes it all feels like way too much…

39 Erin W. { 02.17.10 at 3:24 pm }

We’ve been having a good ol’ time watching the Olympics.

I’ll take something yummy to go along with the “what are we going to do next?”
Currently researching our options in regards to adoption vs. donor ~~0
So, if others have done/experienced either, looking for comments/suggestions/links to experience in the deciding factor. 😀

40 Cherish { 02.17.10 at 6:18 pm }

Geez I don’t care, just give me a drink to deal with this week. Had my first vaginal u/s on Monday, and the RE then moved me to the 3D u/s machine and apparently I have a moderate septum in my uterus. First HSG is scheduled for Friday. What a lovely week this has been.

41 coffeegrl { 02.18.10 at 12:11 am }

I’m in love with this new snowboard cross event! And having lived in Seattle and therefore quite close to Canada, I’ve developed a real fondness for curling. I always thought it just sounded weird, but I think I could actually give that one a go!

As long as the drinks are virtual I would LOVE a huge glass of a nice deep merlot right about now. I had a terrible OB exam a couple of weeks ago and I’m sort of dreading the possibility of another exam/doctor’s visit while we’re here in Japan so I’m honestly hoping we can just put it all off until we get back to the U.S. Assuming we can re-activate our American health insurance coverage without any snags, that’s exactly what I’d like to do. I shudder at the thought of another visit like the one I just had.

42 Katie { 02.18.10 at 4:08 pm }

Rusty Nail here (whisky & Drambuie).

Suffering with anniversaries and birthdays, over here.

43 jodifur { 02.18.10 at 11:06 pm }

I’m not an Olympics fan, at all, but I got totally addicted to Snowboard cross. I didn’t even know this was a sport, let alone an Olympic Sport.

Pinot Noir Please

44 Battynurse { 02.19.10 at 1:17 am }

Well, since the FET isn’t happening, I think I’ll have a bunch of different drinks. Some of my favorites are: Grape pucker and 7 up, whiskey and 7 up or diet coke; Kahlua, Bailey’s and butterscotch all together, some Zambuca and some Appel Korn.

45 Aunt Misfit { 02.19.10 at 11:42 pm }

Hangar 1 martini please. I’m waiting to see the RE to tell me the “plan” on Monday. Currently creating about 10 worst-case-scenarios in my head so that the consult won’t be anywhere near as bad as I imagine.
