Steady as a Coffee Addict

As you all know, my favourite infertility distraction is cake decorating and if you have to dump a lot of time and money into classes to stop yourself from sitting at home and poking your sore ovaries, then I suggest taking up something that you can utilize down the line. And what better skill to have than cake decorating? Everyone loves a cake. Everyone. Except for the people who don’t. But they don’t count.

Yesterday, I made a vanilla cake stuffed with raspberry buttercream and covered in vanilla buttercream. And painted pale pink cherry blossoms over it for a couple in my husband’s office who had just gotten engaged. Really–I’m that nice. I bake cakes for my husband’s coworkers.

Last night, we were watching Ace of Cakes on the Food Network and I couldn’t help but notice how steady Duff Goldman’s hands were as he painted an outline on the side of a cake. I enviously pointed this out to my husband who replied, “you never see a cup of coffee in his store, do you?”

At that moment, we both looked down at our shaking hands and I thought, “whatever. I am not trading coffee for cake decorating.” I’ve given up quite enough, thank you. Including that second 16-ounce cup. Great–leave it to me to choose a skill that sucks away all the joy from life…

I mean, except for the joy of eating homemade cake.

Photos as per Tara’s request… (damn I wish I hadn’t taken them against my dining room table cloth)

You know I took a picture–I’m such a whore.

Loading it onto the computer right now. We’ll see if it turned out okay. It looked too bright when I took it last night.

Very pretty cake!

I was just recently going to sign up for a cake decorating class that a friend gives and then I found out you have to bake a cake and make icing each week…. I’m not much of a baker. I think I prefer the decorating to the baking.

Eating cake on the other hand. That I can do!

Your cake is beautiful. I decorate cakes sometimes. I realized pretty quickly that cake decorating isn’t a cheap hobby, though. All of my piping tips/bags/stuff cost me at least $500. I have fun doing it, and I loved the classes so that makes it worth it, right?

It does look beautiful, although I got lost in the repetitive use of the word “buttercream.” Pure heaven.

That cake is beautiful, wow, I would be so proud if I made something like that. How long did it take you to learn how to do that?

I took 3 classes over the course of a year and a half. And then practiced a lot, passing along the cakes to my husband’s office. Because no one can eat that much cake.

That’s a beautiful cake! I took cake decorating lessons many years ago, and it was a lot of fun. I still have all the stuff. I’d be up to my ears in cakes if I baked as much as I would like to, but unfortunately it’s a hobby that isn’t very compatible with PCOS… 🙁

Coffee or not, heck, that is GORGEOUS! And the tablecloth only serves to set off the cake’s loveliness.

DELISH!

(Am taking a hip hop dancing class to avoid your aforementioned staying home and poking ovaries, although I don’t think I’ll be taking any pictures.)
