#MicroblogMondays 153: The Things We Don’t Notice

I am about to blow your mind. (Unless you already knew this. In that case, you’re about to stare at your screen, incredulously.)
I asked the Wolvog the date. He glanced that his phone and told me the date. I asked him how he knew it without opening the calendar app, and he pointed out that the ICON IS ANIMATED.
Yes, I had to scream that.
The icon itself shows the date. Look at it. Every day the icon changes. Same with the Clock app. Look at it! The little hand is going around. I have never noticed that the icon moves, but now I can’t stop staring at it. It makes me wonder what else I’m missing.
What cool thing did you learn recently?

#MicroblogMondays 152: You Have What It Takes
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
I recently read a post on Modern Mrs. Darcy that stuck with me long after I closed the browser. It’s a very simple idea, but one that is life-altering if put into continual practice.
Lie to yourself.
Okay, so the post isn’t really about lying to yourself. But it’s about making the conscious decision every time you are nervous or unsure about something that you have what it takes. Say those words to yourself: “Oh, Melissa (well, fill in your own name), don’t worry about it because you have what it takes.” And then proceed as if someone else that you trust a lot has reassured you that you are up for the task.
She talks about it in terms of surfing, but it applies everywhere. It’s a powerful feeling to go from being unsure about a decision to deciding you have what it takes and moving ahead. Both with the small things and the very huge, life changing things.
So what are you telling yourself today that you have what it takes? What difficult moment are you trying to get through, or what new path are you unsure about starting?

#MicroblogMondays 151: Chasing the Taste
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
We had the most incredible passionfruit vinaigrette on our honeymoon. The waiter went back into the kitchen and returned with the recipe, minus amounts. I tried to recreate the salad dressing a few times, but it never came close to that vinaigrette. I still think about it as one of the best things I’ve ever tasted.
Apparently, that’s science.
There is a reason why you think food tastes better on vacation, and why so many of the tastes you “chase” (as in, try to recreate or wish you could have them again) come from vacations. New York magazine explains:
The obvious answer is context: new place, new things. But context also works in other, more surprising ways to make our sense of taste into the fluid, location-dependent thing that it is.
Think about the foods you still think about long after the meal and remove all the emotionally-based ones such as your mother’s chicken. How many of the ones that are left came from a local restaurant or friend’s house, and how many came from your travels or a vacation?

#MicroblogMondays 150: Making Space

I called a hotel to make reservations for two dates and was told that they didn’t have rooms with multiple beds available for the first date, though they did for the second. But when I gave my name to make my reservation, the staff member happily jumped into welcoming me, asking about Josh and the twins. We always go to the same place so the moment I gave my name, she exclaimed, “I know the rest of your information. I’ve entered it 500 times.”
She also shifted some people around and made room for us for the first date. I was grateful, but I wavered between feeling like I deserved to be accommodated due to my extreme loyalty and feeling badly that I was getting something special. A business benefits from loyal customers, and you build that loyalty by treating someone well, but it makes me wonder how many times I’ve been told “no” at a new place where a longstanding customer was told “yes.”
Do you think loyalty should be rewarded, or do you think all policies should apply to all people regardless of whether it’s their first time or 100th time frequenting a place?

#MicroblogMondays 149: Fireworks
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
Our town set off their fireworks over the weekend. Why do we set off fireworks to mark the day? Aren’t the fireworks supposed to be recreating the noise and intensity of battle without the danger? Clearly the people who fought in the war are long gone, but this seems counter to the spirit of the day.
If we’re celebrating the fact that there is an aftermath to the war — that it’s over — shouldn’t we be marking the day with something calm? Gentle music and back rubs? I like watching fireworks, but upon reflection, it seems like a strange way to mark the day.
Are you doing anything for July 4th if you live in the US? I’m assuming for everyone else that the day is just Tuesday.
