I learned from a BBC article that cafes used to be called penny universities. For the cost of a penny, you could get a cup of coffee and sit and learn about local politics, world news, or general gossip.

I love this idea of knowledge being accessible. We wanted more people to be educated. To hear the news. Sure, there was a cost in the sense that you needed to pay a penny — which, on average, was about 1/10th of a person’s daily wage — but I’m paying a lot more than a 10th of my salary on each kid’s education.

WikiCommute randomly chooses an information rabbit hole to travel down based on the length of your commute, coupled with your reading speed. They build a continuous scroll of random Wikipedia content. Which could be a little dangerous, now that I think about it. Wikipedia is generally safe, but it’s poor practice to leave all curation of information going into your eyeballs to chance.

Nevertheless, it’s a fun idea of filling your commute with random knowledge vs. doomscrolling.

I recently learned about posy rings, which are pretty much like the one ring to rule them all, except the writing doesn’t fade. And it’s on the inside of the band (in many cases) instead of the outside. So only the wearer knows that they’re wearing the words around their finger.

The V&A has a bunch in their collection.

At some point, I told myself that I wouldn’t like Naomi Novik’s Scholomance trilogy. I had it on my TBR and took it off. And then it showed up on a list of books people love who also love The Magicians, and that trilogy is my favourite.

I cannot believe I almost missed these books. They are funny and clever and hit the same spot as Rainbow Rowell’s Simon Snow books. I love them.

Another geography-based game, which I love because I can pretty much name and place every country in the world on a map as well as identify them by shape or distance between two places. That was not the case years ago when I first started playing Worldle or Globle. Yay games!

I like this one — it’s one of my evening games — but you first have to guess the continent the mystery country is on. So you may lose two or three turns just trying to get on the correct continent. So I don’t love that aspect. But other than that, Geografind is a super solid geography game.
