#MicroblogMondays 47: Treasure Island

Mental Floss had an article about Disney’s abandoned Discovery Island.  I don’t have strong feelings about the space like I do about the abandoned River Country (I loved that place!), but I was totally intrigued by an idea floated in the article:

Soon after the island closed, Disney met with Robyn and Rand Miller, the creators of the hugely popular computer games Myst and Riven, hoping to recreate a real-life version of the adventure game. A certain number of guests would be admitted to the island each morning and would have a set number of hours to explore, unlocking secrets and finding hidden passages in the process. No two experiences would ever be the same.

I clicked around and read more about the abandoned project.

What?  I want to go to the Myst-themed amusement park.  I want my own real-life adventure.

We have something similar-ish sounding here in DC (and I know it’s in a lot of other towns).  You get locked in a room and have to solve a mystery and get out.

What do you think: sounds fun or not your cup of tea?

#MicroblogMondays 46: Coffee Break

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I recently read about fika, the Swedish coffee break tradition.  Like British tea, it sounds like something missing from my life: that purposeful break in the middle of the day with a good beverage and something small to eat.

I drink coffee and tea, and I eat meals, but I rarely take a break.  I am much more likely to consume the beverage while working.  Part of it is that my work day is both truncated and spread out — I work from about 9 am – 3 pm and then again after 8 pm.  When your work day is broken up like that, you tend to want to use every minute to its fullest.  Part of it is that it isn’t part of my culture; the break in the middle of the day.  I don’t know anyone who takes a break in the middle of the day on a regular basis.

But maybe I need to do this.  I need to declare from 1 pm to 1:20 pm, regardless of whatever else is happening, as my fika.  I especially like the idea of getting a cookie to boot.

Do you have any breaks built into your day?  And do you keep them sacred?  Or do they only happen when you can find the time?

#MicroblogMondays 45: Isolation

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I recently read about the most isolated place on earth: Tristan da Cunha.  It takes a week to reach the island from the closest piece of mainland.  It’s 1000 miles from the nearest town.

I love islands: the moodier, the better.  I’m not really into happy, sunny islands.  I’m more drawn to the Outer Hebrides than I am to the Greater Antilles.

Part of me would love the chance to live somewhere like Tristan da Cunha for a year, even if I’d have to contend with slow Internet.  (Perhaps I should wait to go until they fix that problem.)  And part of me thinks I would go mad living somewhere that isolated when I’m accustomed to being near big cities, with all their conveniences at my fingertips.

Do you think you could live somewhere as isolated as Tristan da Cunha for a year if given the chance?

#MicroblogMondays 44: Money or Accolades

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

Nathan Bransford asked a question a few months ago that comes up again and again and again on the Internet, but it’s a good one:

When it comes to your creative work (in this case, a book), “would you take money or an award?”

It’s popularity or prestige. It’s fame or skill. It’s money or accolades. You only get one.

Pick your poison.  I mean… uh… reward.

Would you rather have your creative work sell like hotcakes while you’re alive but burn out and be forgotten in the future, or have your work not sell well but stand the test of time?

#MicroblogMondays 43: Public Pet Peeves

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

Last weekend, we went to the beach for the day.  The experience reminded me why I like to go to the beach mid-week during high season.

Beyond how crowded it is on the weekend, there were two types of things that annoyed me that I rarely encounter during the week.  The first was the breaking of established rules where the activity affected other people.  For instance, smoking on the beach.  We ended up moving two times due to smokers.

The other was more slippery: playing music on the beach.  As far as I know, there isn’t an established rule against playing music without headphones.  But we all know that it is annoying unless the person blasting the music happens to have inadvertently chosen music that you also enjoy.  I’m sure those people wouldn’t want to hear my music, and I certainly didn’t want to hear their music.  But I had to hear their music because they decided to play it aloud.

I feel that way about cell phones in cars — it’s breaking an established rule that is there to protect other people — and perfume — not a rule but certainly annoying and affecting others when a person wears too much in public.

The answer is, obviously, to never leave my house.

What are your pet peeves in public spaces?
