#MicroblogMondays 57: Ethical Dinner
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
Not Quite Nigella had a post recently about an ethical dinner she attended. She explains:
The Ethics Centre’s new series of dinners called “Hard Things To Talk About” pairs innovative and surprising food, performances, speakers and thought provoking conversation. This isn’t a regular, “safe” dinner but one where your preconceptions may be dashed and you may be asked uncomfortable questions.
At her dinner, the theme was bias. The food, the conversation, the speakers, the interactions were all meant to challenge her to think about bias.
It sounds like a cool idea, though one that could grow quite uncomfortable if not done well.
Do you think you would be up for a dinner like this? Would it be different if you were paired with someone you would have to keep seeing in life vs. a stranger?

#MicroblogMondays 56: Would You Go?

I’m working my way through a backlog of Note to Self episodes, and there was a particularly interesting one on space travel and specifically space tourism such as Virgin Galactic*. While we may not get a person to Mars in my lifetime (or maybe we will?), I agree with the host, Manoush Zomorodi, that it seems likely that we’ll have to make a decision on whether we’re up for a suborbital flight, similar to the way that we have to make a decision on how we feel about airplane travel.
I don’t think I’m up for it. There are plenty of places I’d like to go and things I’d like to see, but I’m equally okay never getting to those places or seeing those things. Life is short, you can’t fit everything in, and I understand that some of those dreams may need to float away. And space is one of those things: I’m totally okay never going up into space.
How about you? If you had the financial means, would you take the risk of a suborbital flight if it meant you got to see space up-close?
*Heads up: Infertility pops up a few times in the episode.

#MicroblogMondays 55: Holy Days

Today is Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, so I likely won’t be online. I wrote this ahead of time so everyone else could meet up because I love this weekly gathering so much. But I also think that it’s important that I go offline and mark the day.
I don’t know why going offline feels like the right thing to do. I mean, you’re supposed to gather with others as you reflect on your past year and mentally plan your new year. I gather with people offline, but I also gather with people over the phone and online. I’m not sure why gathering in one way feels right and another way feels wrong.
Do you feel like there are times when you are supposed to be offline; where going online somehow feels wrong?

#MicroblogMondays 54: Who Are These People?

Can we pause for a moment and discuss the website FakeaBaby.com? It was in an article about the Michigan girl who faked her triplet pregnancy for 9 months.
There isn’t much to say about the girl, but the website? Who created this website? I am aware that you can find just about anything on the Web, but all of these sites are created by human beings. Who are these human beings?
Do you ever wonder that? I think about it all the time when I’m walking through the grocery store. These strangers I’m seeing around me, one of them could be a troll online or a creator of a hurtful site or a seller of items that allow people to commit fraud. All these people who create these sites or leave hurtful comments online… they all live somewhere. They all have families or friends. They could be standing right next to you at some point today.
Do you think about those people?

#MicroblogMondays 53: Stage and Screen
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.
*******
Josh and I got tickets to a Fathom Event. Sometimes plays or operas or ballets livecast a single performance, and you can go to the local movie theater to see it. The tickets are slightly more expensive than the average movie ticket, and because it’s livecast, you’re held to a single showing.
When I tell people that we’re going to see a play in the theater, the response is mixed. Some think it’s a great way to make theater accessible and others think that it’s not worth seeing if you can’t be in-person.
Me? I’m excited to see the play. Even if we lived in London, we couldn’t have afforded the tickets. Plus, I’ll have a great view as if I’m sitting in the front row (whereas in reality, I would have been in the back of the theater), able to see the actors’ expressions. Seeing a theater performance is wonderful, but this is, too.
What about you? Would you go see a live theater performance on a screen in a movie theater?
