#Microblog Mondays 115: Taken for Granted

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I wanted to get a red shawl to wear to the polls tomorrow, even though the meaning will be lost on all but a few select nerds.  Susan B Anthony wore a red shawl while fighting for the right to vote.  I love this quote from the Museum of American History:

It was said in Washington that there were two signs of spring: the return of Congress to the nation’s capital and the sight of Anthony’s red shawl as she also returned to lobby congressmen.

I am very emotional about getting to vote for a woman president in a way that I’ve never been emotional before when going to the polls.  Which is probably the definition of privilege.  I’ve always taken it for granted that I have the right to vote, though there are women voting today who were born before that right to vote.

I guess I wanted to wear red to thank those women who did the hard work of bringing us to this point.

Do you ever think about those women when you head to the polls, or is it only front and center in so many people’s minds because we finally have a possibility for a female president?

#Microblog Mondays 114: Reusing Costumes

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

It’s Halloween tonight, and the kids are going in the same costumes they used last year.  Which are also the same costumes they used for Purim.  Which may very well be the costumes they end up using this upcoming Purim.

It has been a busy month.  Halloween sort of slipped through my fingers.

I actually like making them costumes, especially seeing their faces when they’re dressed up as their favourite characters.  So I feel strange that their costume doesn’t really reflect their current interests.  If we had more time, I think the ChickieNob would want to be Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Wolvog would want to be a character from Overwatch.

If I had more time, I would want Josh and I to go as Ember and Umber from The Magicians.  (Not that he would ever agree to this.)

Costume that best shows what you’re into right now?

#Microblog Mondays 113: Reading Aloud

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

The twins and I still read aloud every night.  Once upon a time, I worried that they would outgrow it, but we still like to sit down together at 8:30 pm.  I read aloud a chapter and we discuss it in real time, even though they read books on their own the rest of the day.

We’re currently reading Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One.  I didn’t know if they would get into it, so I was holding another book in reserve, but they have been rabid about this story.

It’s interesting.  I don’t think it has anything to do with the games or movies listed in the book, though they have  certainly played almost all of the games and like a lot of the movies.  I think it’s more that the Wolvog relates to Wade.  He’ll point out similarities between them.  It’s almost as if, by reading the story, he’s understanding himself.

Have you ever found yourself in a story or related to a character in such a way that you understood yourself better?

Mine?  Arthur Dent.  I often feel like a female Arthur Dent.

#Microblog Mondays 112: Frideswide Day

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

This Wednesday is St. Frideswide’s feast day.  We celebrate it as a family every year, usually doing something Alice-related or having a special meal or cake.

But this year, celebrating St. Frideswide Day on St. Frideswide Day isn’t really going to work.  I can pull together scones for breakfast, but that’s pretty much it.  A bunch of work projects are all due at the same time, so it would be really great if we could celebrate her life on Tuesday.  Or Thursday.  Sort of any day but that Wednesday.  (Unless Hillary would like to reschedule the debate?  Then we could tuck it into the evening hours.)

I feel weird celebrating a holiday not on the holiday, even though it’s a great solution to a common problem.  Lots of people celebrate a holiday early or late so they can get people together or celebrate with two different groups, one after the other.

What do you think of celebrating holidays not on the actual day?

#Microblog Mondays 111: The Crown

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

The ChickieNob and I have been waiting forever for the BBC to release The Crown, and it will finally be here at the beginning of November.  We are going to devour that series while speaking to each other in British accents and eating scones and wearing sweater sets.  So excited.

But…

What gave me pause was wondering how the Queen — who is still alive — processes art made about her life.  It’s one thing to have a show made about you after you’re gone, but it’s another to have your life dramatized for entertainment or educational purposes.  I know she lives in the public eye, but it gave me pause to think of her bothered by (or maybe she loves it?) the show.

What do you think of biographical movies made about people while they’re still alive?
