Meet My Unicorn

The Wolvog was having trouble sleeping, and I could tell that he was on the verge of tears.  We climbed into the glider so we could talk quietly while we rocked.  He finally admitted that he was now scared of the dark because of Zork.  You see, he was frightened that he would be eaten by a Grue.

“Well, Grues don’t exist,” I told him.  “The makers of the game made them up.”

“How do you know?” he asked.

“Because I’m an expert on magical creatures, like I sort of have a PhD in magical creatures.  So I know which ones exist and which ones are totally fake.  And Grues are fake.”

“Oh.”

What I didn’t tell him was that unicorns are so.totally.real.

*******

If you could have one imaginary creature as a pet, which would you choose and why?

Even though I’m fairly anti-bird, I think I’d go with a phoenix.  I don’t do well with goodbyes, and I would never have to say goodbye to a phoenix because it would keep regenerating after each combustion.  Plus, our living room is red, and I think a phoenix would look pretty in there against the red walls.

Well, you stole my idea and now I’m idealess. But as I have a phoenix tattoo, I guess I’m good on that front. But how about we give my worst enemy a blast ended skrewt??

@Heidi – a phoenix tattoo is brilliant! I’m going with a hummingbird for my next, but the idea of how apropos a phoenix would be did give me a beat of pause.

I got nothing on the mythical creature.

I have this bump between my eyes. It’s like a hunk of bone or a calcification or something. I don’t know. It’s not really visible unless I contort my face a certain way and the light glances off it just right. But you can feel it. So I like to tell kids that I’m a unicorn and let them give me the “you’re a crazy lady” look. Then I tell them that they cannot see because they do not believe and let them feel my “horn.” They are consistently blown away by my secretly magic nature.

I totally want to be a Dragonlord. Dragons aren’t tame, but I want to ride one. 🙂

I’d love a dragon too! I’ve always loved them (and lions) and also happen to be a dragon in Chinese astrology (and a Leo too). I have a fabulous idea for a set of 3-4 dragons for a tattoo, but hubby can’t stand tattoos, even the ones I already have. 😀

So, Liana – do the kids call you Ms Unicorn? 😉

I’d love a werewolf as a companion. Or perhaps an orc.

Speaking of unicorns, I would definitely go with a pegasus. As a child, I loved My Li.ttle P.onies (over B.arbies-never played with the things) and had a dream of owning a pegasus as a result. My ponies always talked and had very rich social lives, so I would imagine that my pegasus pet would be like just another person in our house, speaking, eating, flying around town, etc. I would also appreciate a ride around every once in a while in exchange for room and board. Sounds pretty swell to me…

I’ve always had a bit of a thing for mermaids, but I’d rather be one than have one! For a pet, it would have to be something non-sentient but I can’t think of a good one.

I’d like a dragon, if they’re like the ones in How To Train Your Dragon. Toothless is adorable.

ooh… a Hippogriff, please. Or a little family of faeries!

A phoenix. Totally. For so many reasons.

A house elf, but as a friend, not a pet.
