Happy Birthday, Rachel Goldman

Astute readers of Life from Scratch probably already know that today is my character, Rachel Goldman’s, birthday.  She is most likely celebrating it by NOT baking a cake, but instead buying one from some nearby bakery, sticking her finger into the box to steal some icing on the way home, kicking herself for doing so because now she has messed up the cake, and then saying fuck all to that and eating it whole.  Just a girl and her fork.

Which is a step up from her last birthday.  We won’t even mention last year’s birthday since the whole sordid tale is in the book.  And yes, she still has the lobster pin.  Though she and Arianna trade it back and forth as a joke.

The secret you don’t know — which I will reveal now — is that Rachel shares her birthday with my very real best friend.  And I dropped her old last name into the book too in her honour because a good friend is hard to find and when you have one, you celebrate her any way you can.  Let that be a lesson not to interact with me too much lest you find yourself on the pages of a fictional book.

In honour of Rachel’s birthday, the publisher is giving away the Kindle version of the book for free as a promotion.  You can download it without charge for a limited time.  So go share the love with your best friend and toast female friendships for Rachel’s birthday.  Because the broad would do it for you (and she’d let you have a 24-hour mope avec chocolate mousse if you needed that too).

And let my paper friend, Rachel, know that you’re celebrating with her.  And let my very real friend, Julie, know you’re toasting her too.

Argh, I am still waiting for the book to cross the ocean and stuff. Amazon.de says that it will take another 2 weeks.
I am still reluctant to go Kindle. I love paper too much, what can I say.
Anyway, happy birthday, Julie! And happy birthday, Rachel!

Thanks for the free book! I just downloaded it and will read it on my next business trip!

Being the poor (few years out of) college student that I am, I can definitely appreciate a free book. I love to read, and cannot wait to dig into this one. Thank you! Happy Birthday Rachel, and Julie!

Love this! Happy birthday to Rachel! May it be a much better one than last year! And happy birthday to Julie! May you not get a lobster pin!

I just got it yesterday! Happy Birthday to both of the women in your life!

I just found this site after looking under your Amazon author page. I got the free Kindle book yesterday and finished it this morning. I was up late last night until I couldn’t hold my eyes open any longer…that’s the only reason I didn’t finish it then! While my preferred genre is usually mysteries, I loved this book and am anxiously awaiting its sequel. It was both humorous and, at times, profound. For those of you who haven’t read it yet, it is a definite treat! I gave it a 5 star rating on Amazon, and I don’t give those out very often.

Hey, at least the lobster pin was better than a diamond ring. I had a bad birthday during my divorce when my soon-to-be-ex but still living with him set up a date that night. In reading his e-mails, she cancelled on him, lol.

Rach, I totally get you. It’s like we shared the same appletini of life. I wish your fictional blog was around when I went through my divorce.

Julie, bff hard hard to come by. Especially the ones that let you indulge in the 24-hr mope and hold your hair. Happy birthday 🙂

Downloaded the book last night onto my kindle – and am devouring it!!! Had to force myself to go to sleep last night instead of continuing to read, which is what I really wanted to do. It is fantastic!!!

Cool. Thanks for the heads up. I’d read the first chapter and loved it.

My book is finally on it’s way to me (I like an IRL book, not yet into the URL books. But seeing as many of my IRL friends have been replaced by URL ones, the end is likely near for books, too).

Can’t wait!

Happy birthday Rachel!

I think that she should have taken the Lobster pin back to Tiffany’s and traded it in for something that she could have really appreciated! BUT, the fact that her and Arianna are trading it is fun, so I was glad to hear that!

Happy Birthday, Rachel! The world is better with you in it–so thank you Mel for that.

Happy Birthday, Julie! Thank you for being a great friend to Mel, and, I’m sure, contributing to the amazing person she is today.

Happy Birthday Rachel! Enjoy your bakery cake. A girl should never have to bake her own birthday cake.

Happy Birthday Julie! That we all we could be as lucky like you with a best friend like (and for) Mel.

Waiting anxiously for my book tour questions. I can’t wait to see what the others ask.

Oh, should I buy another pair of Fluevogs to celebrate Rachel and Julie’s birthdays?!? Maybe that’s a bit over the top – but I’m *definitely* using their birthday as an excuse to get that fantastic looking carrot cake I said no to this morning. 🙂 It’s been lovely getting to know you, Rachel, and great to meet you, Julie. Here’s to female friendships!

Haha I just realized that Rachel Goldman is almost exactly the same age as me. Born just 5 days before me. I knew I liked her. =)

Just finished reading e-Life From Scratch. Thank you, Melissa Ford, for a wonderful read/story. I am now looking forward to your next. The book was hard to put down. I had to force myself to go to bed/sleep last night and then had to finish it today – right away.

23 Rachel { 02.17.11 at 10:22 pm }

Happy birthday to both Rachel and Julie 🙂 Assuming that last year was Rachel’s 35th, this Rachel just a little over a year younger…

SQUEE! I had the book on my Christmas list, but since my husband and mom both lost their jobs we went with a gift-free holiday. I’m so excited to get to read it! Happy birthday, Julie and Rachel — and thanks for giving me your birthday gift. 😀

29 Nancy { 02.18.11 at 10:34 am }

I loved this book!!! I am going to recommend it to my bookclub; it’s going to be so much fun to discuss. Thank you for the Free kindle version! I just wish it would be sold at Barnes and Noble and Borders as a paperback so all of my friends could buy it too. I noticed that it’s available on Amazon as a paperback, but they are going quickly!

30 Julie { 02.18.11 at 7:38 pm }

Thank you all for the birthday wishes!! It was a lovely day made all the more wonderful by Mel’s post. We should all be so lucky as to have a sister-friend like Mel in our lives. She’s pretty freaking fantastic.

And…I also loved the book, but I’m a little bit biased. xo

31 Noah { 02.18.11 at 8:43 pm }

I’m Noah, Julie’s husband.

Melissa’s post, and the attached responses, make this the single best thing on the Interweb. Ever.

32 Calliope { 02.18.11 at 10:02 pm }
